Death in Winter

So I just finished this book, which I assume is the first novel in the TNG Relaunch as it takes place shortly after Nemesis. I have to say I liked it overall, though there were a few parts, mainly the subplot on Romulus, that left me unsatisfied. I assume this thread will be picked up in another book, as they very specifically left it open ended. I was really rooting for the upstarts on Romulus, and was somewhat depressed at what happened to their cause. Though again, I'm assuming this isn't the last of it we'll see.

I don't really want to get into specifics as there might be people out there who haven't read it yet, but I thought the ending itself was really moving. I wouldn't mind seeing Greyhorse and Pug Joseph again, as I thought they were both interesting characters and were also left sort of open ended at the end of the novel.

I'm assuming Resistance is the next on chronologically. I'm sort of dreading progressing through the next few as I know what's waiting for me with Janeway, but we'll see. What was everyone else's thoughts who has read this?

If you want more adventures with Greyhorse and Joseph, read Friedman's novels Reunion and his six novels in the Stargazer series. (Though, of course, these are prior adventures. Their fate going forward hasn't been addressed.)

And yes, the next book chronologically is Resistance, followed by Q&A, Before Dishonor and Greater Than The Sum. These stories run concurrently with the Titan series, until the two series join together in the Destiny trilogy.

I was disappointed with Death in Winter. I didn't hate it (as others have), but I was certainly expecting something more. To a certain extent, it seemed like it couldn't decide between being a personal drama or a political thriller, and suffered for being neither.

I read it recently and really liked it. The plot of the plague hitting the Romulan world and Sela doing her best to cause problems was engaging. For me, the better part of the book was the political tension on Romulus. I already thought the situation in the Empire would be somewhat interesting after Nemesis. Death In Winter worked forward from that a little and did so nicely in my opinion.

So where does Titan fit in in regards to the DS9 Relaunch? IIRC, Ezri is still in there, and she's not a captain yet.

The Titan series is about 2-3 years after the DS9 Relaunch's most current novel.

The Romulus subplot does get picked up in Titan: Taking Wing.

Does it pick up where Winter left off, more or less?

Pretty much, yeah. Titan is sent to lead a convoy and do talks with the Romulan government, which picks up from the whole "government in crisis" plot in Death in Winter.

The most recent DS9 novel is set in January 2377. Titan: Taking Wing begins at the end of 2379. Aside from its first chapter (which corresponds to the start of Nemesis), it pretty much begins immediately after Death in Winter ends.

Hmm. I read Taking Wing so long before Death In Winter that the connection there never occurred to me.

I was disappointed with Death in Winter. I didn't hate it (as others have), but I was certainly expecting something more.

Funnily enough, after all the frantic Dead Janeway threads of recent times, the coming of "Death in Winter" carried the spectre of possibility that Bev Crusher was going to be killed off in this novel, especially after the previews of the the haunting cover art! I seem to recall MargaretClark having fun teasing people with hints like, "Despite what 'Nemesis' suggested, Crusher won't be returning to her old position as Head of Starfleet Medical." There were several angry "but Bev's a continuing canonical character!" debates here.

What I wasn't expecting was the return of "Reunion"'s Greyhorse and Josephs. I think I enjoyed that aspect the most.

I liked DiW very much. I was fairly sure that Bev was going to survive the novel but, as the start of TNG's Relaunch, MJF certainly through in a few great curve balls at the end.

Not sure if that's in direct reply to me or if you were just using it as a launching point, but by 'more' I meant greater depth to one (and preferably both) of the principle plotlines, not more killing.

I couldn't get into it. The Titan stuff I just dnt bother with. I've never been a fan of either Riker or Troi.

Actually, even though I have not read ANY of the post Nemesis material except Death in Winter I am really looking forward to the Titan series and all of the other books that come after the last TNG era film.

I might be a little biased as I was able to read the "A Time To" series all at one time, viewed Nemesis again, and then read Death In Winter in a relatively short amount of time. I really like how the different series are running at the same time. Of course, it might be a while before I can enjoy that span of books:(, but I am looking forward to it.

I enjoyed this novel a lot. I thought the Picard-Crusher development was something that should've happened a long time ago. I also liked MJF's description of the post-NEM Romulan political scene. The inclusion of the Stargazer characters wasn't forced and it worked. It has been one of my favorite of the TNG 'relaunch' novels.

I also liked Resistance though I know a lot of people on this board weren't fans of it. As for the rest of the post-NEM TNG books, here's my take:

-Q & A: Got Q spot on, but I didn't care for the story
-Before Dishonor: A bit over-the-top and cartoonish
-Greater than the Sum: Did a good job removing the bad taste BD left in my mouth
-Destiny Trilogy: Pretty epic story. If you like the Borg, this one's for you. I still don't think the trilogy was better than PAD's Vendetta novel about the Borg though
-A Singular Destiny: I liked this novel better than I thought I would. I think it did a good job describing the events post-Destiny as well as setting the scene for the adventures to come

Neither am I, but for some reason, I did like the Titan parts of Destiny, and I've heard good things about Titan.

Then again... DS9 is my fav., and I don't like Ezri...

Well, I'm batting .500 at least.

Seriously, thanks for the honest opinions. :)
