Dear Fandom,

This has been a long time coming, but I think you knew on some level that this was inevitable. There's been tension between us for years now. It was wonderful and special and new and exciting when we first met. We were both kids, young and idealistic and excited to see the world together. It's true that I owe you alot. You really saved me back in the old days; when I wasn't sure I could go on, you brought me back from syndication hell and helped me find my footing on the Big Screen. You supported me even when you weren't sure what I was doing with myself, and you stood by me even when I lost faith and started to question God (remember that time I asked him what he wanted with a starship? ugh!).

But things started going sour... I can't track down exactly when. Or maybe it was always this way but was just never this bad before. The way you're so quick to anger at the slightest misunderstandings, the way you freak out any time I try something new. The way you act so offended and jealous when I do things for anyone other than you (Seriously? You're hardly the most important part of the market-share. You're not even my biggest target demographic! Get over yourself!)

Over the years you've gotten more and more crass and obnoxious and this has stopped being of benefit to me. You're someone who is terrified of change at a time when I need, more than ever, to try new things. You even make your own imitation copies of me and talk about how your imaginary version of me is so much better than the real me (Who DOES that?). Sometimes you make jokes about how I actually died a long time ago and the current me is an imposter. Like I'm not allowed to be anything if I'm not exactly what YOU want, right?

I should have seen the signs the way you reacted to my parents' divorce. When CBS and Paramount split up, they were really careful to make sure I wouldn't hve to take sides. CBS could have me on broadcast and Paramount would get visits on the big screen. They went out of their way to setup this weird fantasy reboot thing just to make sure you didn't get too offended. They did all of this for YOU. And how did you respond? The horrible things you said about Paramount were totally uncalled for, just for starters, but then you acted like I should choose sides with you and run back to CBS. You didn't once stop to think that maybe I LIKED some of the new things I was getting to do with Paramount? That maybe I was finally branching out, reaching a new audience? Did you think that maybe it was good for me to get to feel like I did back when I was still young and the world was fresh and exciting and full of possibilities? Of course you didn't, Fandom. You only think of yourself. You only EVER think of yourself. And now you're doing it again, this time to CBS, and you're all angry and hateful because they're not asking YOU what they should do with me. It's not all about YOU, fandom. You don't own me, and after the way you turned your back on me after I sent you that super embarrassing valentine back in 2005 (I TOLD you I was drunk!), I don't owe you anything at all.

I'm sorry, Fandom, but I think it's time we went our separate ways. I'm going to spend some time with myself for a while, maybe rediscover myself alone without you shouting hateful tings at me all the time. And who knows? Maybe in a few years you'll mature a little and we can pick up where we left off, or maybe you'll finally create your own perfect Star Trek to fawn over that fits what you always wanted me to be? (Seriously! Who DOES that?) Or maybe, just maybe, I'll find myself a new fanbase who appreciates me for me and not what it wants me to constantly compares me to what I used to be when I was still young and naive. Either way, this is goodbye. Please don't call me anymore, and I really suggest you might want to seek counseling for your anger issues.

Sincerely,

Star Trek

Don't lay this all on us, you betrayed us. You left us to try to make new young friends who don't like older folks. Have fun playing with your lens flares and weirdly-proportioned CG starships. You were much more fun when you were younger. :P
