Deadliest Catch

I enjoy it when I see it, which isn't often. It's one of my "hotel room" shows. Whenever I'm in a hotel, it seems to be on. ;) Charmed also falls into that category.

But yeah, I find it fascinating. Cool show. How do the camera crews manage in all those storms?

I've watched it on occasion. I find it very interesting to see how people cope working under those conditions and working together in close quarters. The episode that really got to me was the one where the captain of one boat was watching another tie up their pots. He said it was too dangerous and something bad would happen. Sure enough, someone got washed overboard. Since people can't survive in that water for more than 15 minutes without a survival suit, the captain swung his small boat around and fished the guy out.

The reaction of the fisherman was really something. He sat there, wide-eyed and shivering. He grabbed the captain and just kept saying, "You saved my life." It gave me chills.

My bad. I thought last night's ep was the premiere based on the trailer, but I was close. :D The camera crews had some significant challenges, being totally unexperienced in the early seasons with how dangerous the job really is, and what a difficult environment it is to film in. I was reading a thing on wiki last night that the cameras, which cost 20k apiece, are frequently damaged by the rough environment. Sig Hansen of the Northwestern also saved a cameraman's life in S1.One of the more chilling moments for me was the time one ship (was it the Wizard, perhaps? Or Time Bandit?) went to the crab station, and nearly got trapped by the ice blocks that were coming in. It's one hell of a dangerous job, but that's part of what I enjoy about the show. The crews on the boats are truly brave to do what they do, and I'm glad that they allow themselves to be filmed so the world can see them excel.

I stumbled on to "Deadliest Catch" during the first season and I've been hooked ever since. Watching how the crabbing operation itself is done is interesting, but the personalities of the captains (and other crewmembers) is what really makes the show.

See, THIS is the kind of reality TV I think is worthwhile. I'm sure most people had no idea such jobs still existed, much less realized how dangerous and profitable they were. I know I appreciate my crab legs more these days, knowing what it took to wrest them from the frigid fathoms!

Did you see the part where the captain wished his son a happy 22nd birthday over the ship's intercom only to find out it wasn't his son's birthday? What kind of scum can't remember his own son's birthday?

Forgetting your wedding anniversary I understand. Who hasn't done that? But forgetting your own kid's birthday? That is just criminal.

I love this show! I've been a junkie since season 1. I have my DVR set to record every episode, even though they replay it 100 times a week. As said above the personalities of the Captains and crew really keep me coming back. It adds a lot of depth to the each episode. The combination of action and drama, and even comedy make for a great viewing experience. And to top it off it's real! Great stuff.

Yeah, I've been following the show for a while. Something about this season seems off though... I dunno, I thought the first couple of years felt more "real", whatever that means.
That doesn't mean that I'll stop watching though.

^ I think it's because there hasn't really been anything different from last season yet, so it seems like "more of the same," and not terribly exciting. But, yeah, I'll keep watching it, too. :D

In his defense, he said his son was born at night. Plus I think his older son said he'd had about 56 cans of Red Bull in a very short span of time.

Agreed. There's some actual reality in DC. I personally think many other "reality" shows are filmed in other realities. :D

There was a special where they went behind the scenes of the show, it was cool.

And there was another show, Crab Fishing or some dumb name, that is the same thing, but they fixed all the problems, got a better host and a better name.

MY cousin fishes out of Dutch Harbor adn works a cod boat. he has met many of the peopel on the show. He had his pic taken with the crew of the Northwestern (minus Sig) and was getting drunk in a bar with Capt. Phils oldest son not toolong ago. While cod fishing may not be as dangerous as crabbing, he has been in rough seas and says it is no joke. He makes a lot of money as well...and probably worth every penny.

(And while the money is good...taxes kill you!)

Caught the new season premiere last night. Anyone else enjoy this show?

Absolutely. It's one of my favourite shows on tv ever. It's absolutely amazing what risks these guys take and what difficulties they have to overcome to achieve their quotas.

I recall the Northwestern actually did pretty well fishing both cod and crab at the same time. It was extra work, but they had a good run and made a lot of extra money. I kind of felt sorry for the Early Star too, as the captain's gamble didn't pay off. Sometimes you get lucky, and sometimes you don't. And when you don't, it hurts.

I thought it was kind of cool that they showed the brown king crab season this year. I didn't know there were different species of king crab out there. And the technique they used to drop the pots looked hella dangerous.
