DEAD SPACE is here! Discussion thread ...

The reviews are coming in!

They're likely far better than many probably guessed they'd be when the game was announced (honestly it seems, on the surface, like little more than an Alien / Doom 3 / RE4 style clone).

But the game is apparently extremely well put together and pretty terrifying.

It's released for the 360 and PS3 tomorrow, and for the PC on the 21st.

I'm still getting over the whole "no pause for inventory switching" as a means of generating tension thing. I suppose I don't have a problem with the idea itself, but if fiddling around switching items gets annoying, then all you end up doing is just backtracking to switch items then moving back to the fight over and over again.

In theory this adds to the immersion of the game. After all, if you really were on the Ishimura, back tracking away from the fight to reload and switch items is what you would do.

Sure, but I guess is it fun?
It's sort of like the argument with RE4/5. Now you can actually strafe, but you still can't move and shoot so you have to make the choice either way - run or fight.

Constantly backing off just to respec can be annoying. I know for me it'd just make me a more conservative player.

^I get what you're saying in practice - the inventory "coat" in Alone in the Dark didn't pause the game either, and it was frustrating ... but for Dead Space I think inventory switching is really, really quick - so the fact that it doesn't pause the game probably shouldn't be a huge deal.

For Alone in the Dark you had to spend a lot of time looking at your inventory to figure things out - all while you're being chewed apart by monsters.

Well I personally tend to play games very conservatively in the first place, so this design choice doesn't bother me.

From what I've heard, it seems like it was made mostly out the drive to immerse you in the game. But given that the game also lacks a quick turn button, it could be a design choice to make you play really carefully. Which makes sense in a survival horror game. You shouldn't be running and gunning a whole lot, and being able to pause the action on the fly to adjust.

Well, there was the rumour that you couldn't pause the game at all, so I suppose it could have been worse.
And the funny thing is, at least on the PS3 version, they're patching up Alone in the Dark to make the inventory system work better. No idea what they're thinking of though.

But yeah, the problem isn't the idea itself - it's whether you have to go through controller finger ballet to do what you need to do. If you have to flip through five pages of menus to do something while the game is going on around you and you're getting killed, that's enough to make me break the game in half.

Although, I still think that Dead Rising takes the cake in annoying game design meant to encourage tension.

What part of Dead Rising are you talking about?

I've played the game, and remember more than one annoying feature. But the one that sticks out is the save system...

Basically the save system, along with the time dependent missions and the fact that you can lose the game by simply taking too long.

Went to Best Buy to pick it up - not in yet :(

It's "released" today but "in stores" tomorrow - that happens a lot, but in poorly advertised ways.

Some stores do apparently have it today, but most won't until tomorrow.

I'm getting the PC version next week anyway, so it's all academic to me :p

I went to Best Buy and Target - nothing. Called Gamestop and Circuit City - both said it'd be in tomorrow.

... when the release date is technically today. Ugh!

They did this with GoW, too.

I never understand how game release dates work, but I run into this with pretty much ever single game I ever try to buy on "release" day.

Nowhere to be found in the Tampa Bay area either.
Believe me, I checked.
Kinda strange because one of my friends was looking for Fifa '09 and had the same results.
Both games were advertised to be released today but all the stores are saying tomorrow.

And I was thinking maybe I was just out of luck because I was a Canuck. Man, I feel so close to my brothers to the south right now.

We'll have Dead Space soon, my friends.

EDIT: Gamespot gave it a 9.0, Gamespy gave it 5 stars... I was gonna get it anyway, but great reviews don't hurt.

yeah it appears to be getting great marks across the board.
I haven't read one negative thing yet about it.

I took the TRU ad with me last night when I went to CC and they said they would have no problem matching the buy 2 get 1 free deal. In fact they will beat it by 10%
Looks like all 3 new games will be about $38.00 ea. SWEET!
