Dead Boy Detectives (Sandman spin-off)

Sparkle Fabulosa

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Released back in April. Two teenage ghosts named Charles and Edwin devote their afterlife to helping the dead with their problems, while evading Death and the Night Nurse. Along the way they are joined by a psychic girl named Crystal Palace and an overly-talkative friendly girl named Niko (my fav!).

Supernatural hijinx ensues! This quite honestly feels like the most Buffy-esque of all the modern fantasy shows that I’ve seen. It has humour, scary beasties, and great characters. I also LOVE the spooky credits so very much! I’m praying with every fibre of my being to the Netflix Gods for a second season.

I haven't gotten a chance to check this out yet, but I probably will once I finish the other stuff I'm watching. It looks really good, and the Sandman connections have made me even more interested.

I am just finishing this show, with a little over an episode to go. It is really a lot of fun. I don't know much about how Charles and Edwin have been portrayed previously, other than their appearance in The Sandman and in Doom Patrol--but I assume that this show is pretty different than in issues from the Vertigo line.

It does give across of Buffy vibe, and in a lot of ways the tone of the series reminds me of another Netflix show, The Good Cop. (Odd comparison I know) The characters are enjoyable to watch and it is great to see Ruth Connell back as well.

I don't know if we will see a second season as it doesn't seem to have made much of a splash, but I'm going to just enjoy what we've got.

My wife and I both saw this a few weeks ago and loved it.

I still give the most Buffy-esque crown to Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, but this show is just as good and fun never-the-less.

I highly recommend this show either way, but if your interest is partly down to Sandman connections you should know that there's barely any crossover at all (at least in this season). It takes place in the same world and maybe there were little easter eggs I didn't notice somewhere, but the only Sandman character who's involved in this at all is Death and even she barely matters to this show. The boys just have to always run away whenever she shows up because they don't want to go to the afterlife. But that also only happens a handful of times and usually all you see is the special effects that announce her arrival. I'm honestly not even sure off the top of my head if they ever actually even show her face (I think there was probably a 30 second scene somewhere in one of the early episodes, but I'm not certain).

Death appears briefly in the first scene of the series. Later, Despair shows up for a single scene. I didn't notice any other references to The Sandman.

No, I'd definitely watch it without the Sandman connection, that just makes me want to see more than I would without it.

I’ve tried watching American Gods, Good Omens, and Sandman but couldn’t get into any of them. For some reason this show ticks all the right boxes for me.

I didn't like Sandman much overall. Good Omens was good, but not nearly as good as the book. American Gods was much better, but I like DBD by far the best of all of them.

I finished this series last night and loved it. I hope we get a second season, but I'm happy where the show ended.

So do I, but it doesn't seem to have made a splash, or even a ripple. Look how long it took to have a thread for it.

Hey, who is that in your avatar?

I thought about making a thread earlier but I wanted to see if someone else did first. Considering how popular Sandman is.

It’s Taylor Swift.

I thought of making a thread as well, but kept waiting for someone else to do--so thank you. Are we allowed to start posting spoilers?

Taylor Swift? She was that country singer who was bullied by Kanye at the Grammies, right?

Love Sandman, but ambivalent on this show. A bit of that is because they're not "boys" like the comic, but teenagers / young adults, so it just feels like something I've already seen. Will probably watch when Sandman season 2 drops.

It’s been out for a while now so yes spoilers are all good. I really want to know/understand what happened to Niko. She and her family are in an igloo in the spirit world, I assume? I want her to be able to roam around like Charles and Edwin, to be a part of the team again.

I do think that that will probably happen if we get a new season. One thing I really liked about this series was the episodic nature with an overarching plot. It made it much more pleasant to watch than having every episode end on a major cliffhanger.
