DC Comics Question

Thanks to my girlfriend, I've been getting back into comic books. Along with my usual DC and Marvel superhero titles, I've been picking up every Star Trek graphic novel I can my hands on.

Anyway, I picked up DC Comics "The Best of Star Trek", and one of the stories involves the crew (minus Spock but plus Saavik) on board the Excelsior with Kirk as the captain.

...what? Why are they on that ship?

Short answer: the comics were released between Search for Spock and The Voyage Home. The story line had them come back to Starfleet and assigned to the Excelsior. When Voyage Home came out, I heard there was a backwards and forced story explaining how the comic adventures match up with the characters' situation at the beginning of the movie (though I haven't read the story in question).

Although, I thought Spock was among them in those comics. Could be wrong though.

Nope. During that period Spock was in command of the Surak.

Best Trek comics ever. Followed closely by Starfleet Academy and Early Voyages. And I didn't mind The Doomsday Bug reconciling the comics with STIV. The only pill you have to swallow is that the Klingon bird of prey fits in Excelsior's hanger. Complaints that it's a big reset button strike me as a little odd considering that Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, which it ties into, essentially resets Trek to pre-Wrath of Khan.

IMO: It happened. Even if they NEVER EVER talk about it

Gotcha. Thanks for the quick replies. I'm enjoying these stories - so far I've cleaned out the two comic book shops in the area of their Star Trek graphic novels. Might have to hit up eBay for the rest of them.

Oh, yes. One of the best Star Trek things ever...ever. Words fail to accurately convey the unbelievable awesomeness of it. I've had the graphic novel of Saga Mirror Universe, but I hadn't gotten around to reading it; and then this little disk of pure joy arrived, and I was able to read the comics prior to the Mirror Universe story. Now, I've reach the part I've looked forward to most, the time the Enterprise crew are in residence on board the Excelsior.

I've barely scratched the surface.
