Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor blog

Very cool.

Looking forward to the next one. :techman:

I will be very disappointed if JJ Abrams doesn't remake Spock's Brain for the next movie. It has win written all over it.

What?

 Those were both great. I've had a rough day, and those reviews really helped get me back into a more cheerful mood. The Spock's Brain one in particular was brilliant.

Ok, I really need to read this. There's something for me to do tomarrow.

I loved the first two reviews. I'm looking forward to reading more.

From the "Paradise Syndrome" recap:
The trio seeks out the nearest group of life-forms, who appear to be Native Americans—a colony comprising traits of the Navajo, Mohican, and Delaware tribes, according to Spock’s expert eye.

I think Spock's expert eye could use a little more training, since the Mohicans were an invention of James Fenimore Cooper. He coined the name as a composite of the Mohegan and Mahican peoples.

On the other hand, maybe this means that the Leatherstocking Tales are canonical in the Trek universe! ;)

Anyway, glad you guys were kind to "Paradise Syndrome," which is one of my favorite TOS episodes (and has my favorite Gerald Fried score). I've always enjoyed it, though these days I can't help but be bothered by how easy it should've been to deflect the asteroid with two whole months to work on it. A single shuttlecraft thrusting against it for eight weeks would've been more than sufficient to alter its course by the slight amount necessary to miss the planet.

I loved the review of "The Paradise Syndrome", especially this: "Spock says its interior is impervious to scans and that it was built by a civilization with technology superior to that of the Federation, which would seem to be anyone capable of making an iPhone."

If I was either of the guys, I'd be pulling a sickie next week to get out of having to watch And The Children Shall Lead...

^ Are you kidding? The opportunity to crap all over that thing is worth the pain. I regret only that I'm on the less-snarky "analysis" rotation next week.

The reviews are cool, but why are you doing them in broadcast order instead of production order?

1. The concept, as I understand it, is to experience the original series in the same manner that its original audience did in the 1960s.

2. That's the order in which they appear on the DVD sets.

To my continued frustration. I don't understand what happened. Ever since TOS went into syndication, it was generally aired in production order. And every reference book and home video release from at least 1980 onward used production order. It was standard, it was accepted, and there was no drawback to it, because there was no story reason for the production order being different, and a lot of subtle reasons why production order worked better (for instance, "Corbomite Maneuver" clearly treating Janice Rand's assignment as Kirk's yeoman as a recent event). But for some reason, the past couple of DVD releases have gone back to the original, decades-old broadcast order, and now it's frustratingly hard to find anything that lists them in production order. It's just so arbitrary, this abrupt, wholesale reversal.

Re: Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor b

Could be worse- they could have done them in *UK* broadcast order- totally random and split into *four* seasons...

Re: Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor b

No, the only proper order is STARDATE order!

Those episodes without stardates should be excluded, as they obviously didn't "really" happen...
