This week I watched on Netflix streaming.
#403 Day of Honor 09/17/97
for the first time since it aired in 1997 and I didn't remember it.
Even though I watched it on an iPhone on a 3" screen this was a great episode.
The scenes of Tom & B'Elanna in spacesuits were pretty good even if the science was bad with lack of oxygen.
A lot of good things with this episode. Tractor beam, ship exteriors, shuttlecraft, a new alien.
Good character stuff with 7 of 9.
Great engineering stuff.
Was this the first time they ejected the Warp core in the VOY series?

thoughts?

No, but it's the first time they showed it.

Honestly, I don't think there's a B'Elanna episode I don't like.
Dawson always delivers.
Pairing her up with McNiel brought the best in him too.
From the shows start I always felt they worked well together.

I really like the Tom and B'elanna dialog...but I'll admit the thing that I most remember about the episode is the warp core ejection. I thought it was nifty that we got to see Engineering with the core missing as well.

Just popping it back in afterwards though, seemed like a bit of a stretch...

Look very carefully at everything Tuvok does in this episode...

He gets promoted the very next day in Revulsion which is almost a two parter linked at the hip with this episode.

I just watched Day of Honor last night. I think I like the episode more every time I see it. The stuff with Tom and Torres is great, but mainly with Torres, which Dawson does a great job carrying the episode. Also agree with Guy Gardner that this and Revulsion (And I would also include Scientific Method) were two good "linked" episodes. Also, I've been paying a lot more attention to the early 7 of 9 development and it really does seem that when Ryan came on, it breathed new life into the show, even though I still like Kes.

I think Seven's emotional growth is what Kes was supposed to be. I think they tripped themselves up when they couldn't get the character of Kes to portray the right balance of wisdom with the innocence of a child. I think with Seven, you saw the child struggling to become a woman.

In watching these early episodes, I do wonder if they made Kes too innocent. More often than not, she was just "there" but there was really nothing more added to the character. The whole growing of powers thing could have been interesting but it wasn't dealt with enough to make that much of an impact. Yeah I liked Kes for being sweet and innocent and playing off the Doctor really well, but other than having an impact on the Doctor, she didn't really have an impact on anyone else. I think the only time we saw a dark side to her was in Warlord and that wasn't really "her" persay.

With 7, one of the interesting facets of her character so far is how everyone is reacting to her. She's an adult, sure, but in reality she's only like 8 years old trying to grow up. Watching these episodes at a relatively quick pace, I'm liking her stuff with Torres for example (In Message in a Bottle Torres calling 7 rude and then complimenting her for sending the feedback shock), or with Kim (Even though it's making Kim look like a buffoon) and then you have Janeway who is the mother figure. There seems to be a direction to 7 that there wasn't with Kes and it's been fun to revisit this time around. I just wish there was a compromise and they got rid of Kim and kept Kes around but oh well.

I just watched that episode maybe two weeks ago, I just found it a little odd that they were about to die pretty much, B'Elanna confessed her love for Tom and he said nothing, after he had been longing for her for ages. Though that was resolved in the following episode, it didn't quite have the same impact.
