David Tennant ruined Dalek Empire 3.

Guy Gardener

Fleet Admiral

I just finished listening to the third installment of Dalek Empire.

It was a 2003 production, so it's not Davy's fault at all, but the notion behind these stories I was lead to believe was "O, look how smegged mankind is with out the Doctor to waddle in at the last moment and save the day" ...And even though Tennant wasn't yet then playing the Doctor, and hell Eccleston and Billie weren't even up and running yet... But I find it difficult to think that all hope is lost, that everything is going to end on a real drab and bloodied downer when I can hear clearly but mistakenly that one of the main characters to the story is Doctor Who.

It's just odd luck is all.

He wasn't so bad. Wait till you hear Noel Clarke going completely medi-evil on the Daleks as some souped-up Rambo in the augmented mech style armour in DE IV.

I agree though that the first 2 with Kalendorf was better dramatically.

Gareth Thomas seems to have a knack for playing rebel leaders too. It's not just Dalek Empire and Blake's 7 either - he's done a few things along those lines. That kind of role seems to appeal to him, and he always does a great job.

Oh no... David did a good job, it's just that he is THE DOCTOR, so I found it nearly impossible to suspend my disbelief that he wasn't going to get the baddies with his sonic screwdriver any second soon.

Actually I heard the 4th installment first, just like with Star Wars. So I was half way through the First Dalek Empire when I thought, "hey, they're playing a little loose with time here... O, it's a parallel story" which has been my idea for a Trek series for years, have another starship on the other side of the federation having adventures at exactly the same time as Picard effe3cted by the same overview of future history... Which I suppose is what Clone Wars is. Meh.

It took me a while to spot Gareth and Noel. But Noels popularized character works in reverse of my problem with David. Well, I suppose Ricky was a Hint about how testerony he could get, but like he said in the production comments he didn't want to be another coward diddling about, which is on par Micky's most fervent desire to not be the tin dog. i expected Micky to cock it up, but Sallis Cade isn't at home for Mr. Cockup.

What really shocked me was the Emperor Dalek had the same voice from Season One NuWho as if there was some sort of inner continuity... Although I must admit that I have never seen the second Doctor story with the emperor so what did he sound like back then?

Yeah both the new Doctor Who series and Dalek Empire (and virtually all the other Big Finish audio appearances) version of the Emperor's voice is based on what he sounded like in Evil of the Daleks, and since Nick Briggs is a superb mimic it's virtually identical to that first incarnation. That's why when we heard the voice at the end of the Bad Wolf cliffhanger, although there was much speculation it was Davros or something, I had no doubt whatsoever that it was in fact the Emperor, so close does it sound to the original..

I don't "hear" the Doctor in UNIT Colonel Brimmicombe-Wood in Sympathy for the Devil, or in the idiot Time Lord in Exile, even though Tennant played both. :)

He kept his natural accent for the Colonel.

IIRC at a party he asked Nick for a part in Dalek Empire and said he could drop the scotch...

I asked him about the TV emperor at a convention once, the production team gave him free regin to do what voice he wanted!

One minor thing I personally don't like about some of the DE stories - they started using sound effects from the movies. And for some (perhap canonical reason) it just seems wrong.
