First post here on TrekBBS...

Same goes to KRAD...

You guys are stinkers...how dare you commit such an amazing saga to life eternal in print. Devouring The Destiny Quadrilogy made me lose an entire day of my life.

Seriously, I know it's been said already here, but David, KRAD...BRAVO!!! WHAT NEXT??

David, from one lifelong Rush fan to another, I'd love to buy you a drink someday here in NYC...KRAD, you are more than welcome to join in, but you will have to hum an entire verse from either La Villa Strangiato or By-Tor and The Snow Dog to earn your beer from me.

Cheers guys...and I am totally serious about the drinks. Anytime. I would truly be honored to meet and chat with you both should the opportunity ever arise.

I refuse to apologize. :D

And I'll have to pay for my own drink, as I don't share the same level of Rush fandom as you and Mr. Mack. (Now if you wanted me to sing a Jethro Tull or Arlo Guthrie or Bruce Springsteen song, we'd be golden....)

KRAD, somehow I figured you would be blatantly unrepentant, fellow NYCer that you are...In any event, you don't get off that easy either since 3 hours of my life mysteriously disappeared while reading Q and A.

And sorry, the only Tull I know is Aqualung, but if you're willing to sing a chorus or two aloud in public then your beer is on me...

BTW, just finished your Brave and the Bold books...once again, outstanding work sir!

cheers,
-lestatar

You are most kind, sir. Glad you enjoyed the trilogy, and I hope you'll check out my forthcoming first original novel, The Calling, when it comes out in July.

I did not realize that was coming out that soon. I thought it was towards the end of the year. Great, something to bring on vacation.

Thanks! I had a lot of fun with that duology....

David, look forward to The Calling...Continued success!

BTW, Warpath was spectacular as well, with possibly the best "action" sequences I have ever read in a ST genre novel. Any plans from your end to revisit Taran'Atar and the DS9 world?

And I am sure you have been asked this a million times before, but do you have any particularly favorite ST characters to write?

KRAD, I am hoping you continue to monitor this thread as well and I ask you the same question. I am guessing maybe Q for you, but would love to know for sure.

Thanks SOOOO much guys for all your hard work and endless creativity.

cheers,

My two favorite Trek characters are Worf and Kira, so I always love an opportunity to write either of them. (Handily, my first two Trek novels were ones in which those two characters played big roles, respectively Diplomatic Implausibility and Demons of Air and Darkness, the latter followed by the Kira-centric "Horn and Ivory.") I'm also very fond of Leonard McCoy, and writing him in The Brave and the Bold and A Singular Destiny (however briefly in the latter) was tons o' fun.

However, while I love those three, and while Q was massively fun to write, probably my favorite characters to chronicle in the Trek universe are the crews of the U.S.S. da Vinci and the I.K.S. Gorkon. They're kinda my babies, y'know?

Glad you liked Warpath, lestatar! As for future forays into the DS9 saga … it's too early to say, really. In a sense, though, I already have, by depicting what lies ahead for Ezri Dax in the Star Trek Destiny trilogy.

As for my favorite Star Trek characters to write … in terms of the established characters, my tastes align with Keith's: I've most enjoyed writing for Worf and Kira. But both are eclipsed in my preferences by characters from the Star Trek Vanguard series, where my special favorites are T'Prynn and Cervantes Quinn.

That reminds me of something I've been meaning to ask,
will Quinn be back?

I refuse to apologize. :D

I'd spring for a beer just to have KRAD sing the entire Alice's Restaurant the 18 min plus version that is.

KRAD: Thanks for answering! I can definitely understand the appeal of Kira - she has always struck me as being one of the more interesting, deeper and strongest female characters in ST. Nana Visitor did a marvelous job bringing her to life on screen and nearly everyone writing her now has continued to flesh her out even more.

I was slow to warm up to Worf for some reason. I was pretty ambivalent towards him for most of TNG, but he really came alive for me during his stint on DS9 - must have something to do with his increased role on the latter show. Now I can't imagine the ST universe without him. I especially loved his stint as an Ambassador and Giancarlo Wu is a terrific creation, if a bit under-utilized IMHO.

As for McCoy, who wouldn't love writing for him? Just coming up with all those "I'm a doctor, not a ..." lines must be like candy for kids for writers bringing him to life on the written page.

I totally understand your love for both the da Vinci and the Gorkon gang and I look forward to straining my eyes some more when I plow through thoses series as well. From what little I have read of SCE [via the DS9 relaunch crossover], the da Vinci certainly has one of the more unique crews in the ST universe. And Captain Klag is certainly shaping up to be one of the more compelling Klingon characters for me, right alongside Martok and Worf.

Finally, though I am sure this has also been asked of you and David [along with the many other authors who, so lucky for us, monitor this board...what are your thoughts re: the STXI film? I can only assume you have seen it and would really love to hear your opinions if you care to share.

cheers!

Actually, David, your deft handling of Ezri throughout the Destiny series was one of the primary reasons why I loved it so much. In fact, it seems to me that beginning with the DS9 relaunch books, an almost conscious effort was made by authors to really refine and develop the Ezri character, an endeavor I totally applaud. Given all that has happened in the TrekLitVerse, especially with regards to the upheaval on Trill and your work with Ezri in the Destiny series, I think the Ezri Dax character is filled with even more potential to become a major force in ST. I look forward to a Captain's Table story featuring Ezri [if one hasn't been done already...hint, hint]...

David, please see my response to KRAD on Worf and Kira. As far as Vanguard goes, I am sad to say that I haven't gotten to that series yet, but I promise I will, especially to discover your voice for both T'Prynn and Quinn. If your other works I have read are any indication, I am sure I will love Vanguard as well.

2 other things if you don't mind David...

- as I inquired of KRAD, I would really like to hear your thoughts on the new STXI film if you are willing to share;

- and I must simply must ask you...

...Can you tell me what it was like to finally meet Alex, Geddy and/or Neil? As a fellow Rush-fanatic, I am overwhelmed with jealousy! Have you been able to get some feedback from the boys re: their "appearances" in the Destiny series as Lerxst and Weinrib? I can only assume you sent them copies of the books. I seem to recall that Geddy, and especially Alex, both have a fondness for scifi in general and possibly ST in particular - I'd really really love to hear any reactions you may have gotten from them in light of your dedication of Lost Souls to them.

Finally, don't think that just because you and KRAD are being so nice by responding here that you guys are off my "Special Stinkers List" - willfully stealing time from me is not something I take lightly...:guffaw:

cheers!

Actually we have a whole thead about the various authors who post here's thoughts on the new Trek movie. I'm not sure where it is ATM, so it might take a little searching.
