David Hasselhoff Won't Be on 'Knight Rider'

I apparently have low standards or something, because I'm enjoying the new show, and really couldn't care less whether The Hoff shows his face again or not.
::Shrug:: I've been struggling with this myself in many ways. I have enjoyed the show a lot, more so than the 2 hr movie back in February. Yet critics and many people on various boards seem hell bent against the show. I guess to each his/her own.

I don't know, I can't put my finger on it. The original show had a lightness to it that was fun, even if it induced cringes. It didn't take itself too seriously, had writers who had less than a passing familiarity with the technologies supposedly involved and were probably better suited for a remake of Gilligan's Island, but ... I could watch it. It made sense within its silly little universe. It was like the A-Team; light, stupid, but fun.

This new show tries too hard. There's too much effort to make it look hip and trendy and it's way too busy. While the old Knight Rider and A-Team never aspired to be more than dumb entertainment, the new show is like watching an awkward younger sibling trying to put on a magic show in front of the family sofa, but funded by Ford -- the kid's clumsy with no real sense of timing, but there sure is a lot of money behind him.

Yup. :)

I couldn't make it through a single episode of Team Knight Rider. Saying that this new show is better than TKR is like saying that sitting on a thumbtack is better than eating one's own feces. One of those activities is less repulsive than the other, but that doesn't mean that the least repulsive activity is something that one would actively choose to do.
Oookay...that's in the Way Too Much Personal Information File...

Still prefer TKR though.

I dunno. I can "watch" this show it's just missing something. It seems like it's all flash and kewl and no substance.

TOS Knight Rider had an ounce or two of substance to it -mostly in KITT and Michael's interactions and KITT didn't need flashy special effects, cut scenes or morphing powers to work (Super Pursuit Mode accepted.)

Know what I mean? This show just "misses something."

It misses a certain chemistry to it and the whole base of operations cast and set is just all flash and no substance and Michael and KITT just don't have quite the same chemistry as the original.

I think Michael and KI3T are beginning to show that chemistry, especially in "Journey into the end of Knight". However, I will say that in TOS Michael and KI2T established that chemistry much faster. I am also of the opinion that the cast is far too bloated. Torres is fine since it seems they're setting him up for some type of fall, but Zoe and Billy could disappear without taking too much away from the show (and I'm saying this even though I enjoy the characters).

Yeah, just watch the first episode of KR:TOS, their chemistry is there and established by the end of the episode and their building of that chemistry over the course of the episode is just great, great stuff.

Michael: "You're about as much fun as a divorce. Which isn't that bad an idea, by the way!"
KITT: "Well, I want custody of me!"

Right. And to clarify, I think if the cast was smaller, there would be more opportunity to see only Mike and KI3T interacting. Instead, you have to try to give all these actors screen time, and all it takes is 30 seconds to a minute of interaction between Mike and KI3T to establish something cool, but if that gets taken away by a Billy fainting gag, I think the trade off is not worth it.

Yeah, they need to really, seriously, slim out the cast. All we need is Mike, Sarah (as a partner/Bonnie analogue) and Bruce (our Devon analogue.)

We don't need all of these other people at CTU-lite. They add nothing and just slow things down.

I mean, for fuck's sake, guys... it's Knight Rider! We're not talking about Hamlet or War and Peace here. The original show was not nearly as great as we pretend to remember it being. It was a lot of fun, but it wasn't exactly Shakespeare either.

Exactly. The new show is no worse than the original was in it's day, it just lacks the purple haze of nostalgia to make it seem better. It's light entertainment, and while arguably there's far too much of that these days, this show is not some kind of stand out example of the worst of the lot.

I mean, do people actually think the people behind the scenes of Knight Rider have it in their heads that they're doing a character drama or something? Come on, Knight Rider has always been about hot women, fast cars and action.

I agree the new show needs to slim out the cast. Billy and the asian chick need to fuck off back to wherever they came from, same thing with the irritating FBI dude.

You have an interesting filing system, considering that my analogy had nothing to do with personal information.

Agreed. There are too many people in the cast as it is. If they cut back on the cast a bit I think it'd be better.

Count me with the crowd who thinks the one man-one car premise is the way this show should have gone. Really, everybody else can be written out or given greatly reduced roles and wouldn't be missed. BTW, what ever happened to Mike's friend from the movie; at the end of that it looked like he was going to be the mechanic? (Or is he in the new series and I've just missed him?)

^No, they dropped him after the pilot movie. And is it just me, or has Sidney Tamiia Poitier been scarce since the season premiere?

Sadly yes, and that's one of my arguments for reducing the size of the cast. I mean, Knight Industries is now part of the FBI, and yet their FBI contact has been absent for 2 out of 3 missions we've seen so far?

I agree with the thinning out of the cast; they should just send Michael off and contact him occasionally to give him missions. KITT should only return to base for upgrades/panel beating when Michael drives the shit out of it.
