David Ajala

TheMadCloner

Captain
Captain
Ajala has some big shoes to fill, being the main guest star for Season 3. He'll be following in the footsteps of Isaacs and Mount, both of whom were excellent.

I think he's quite capable of doing so. Loved his performance in Supergirl as Manchester Black, felt like the writers actually underused him.

Also, it's notable that he's played two characters now with awesome names: Manchester Black and Cleveland Booker.

Admittedly the actual statement is vague and open to interpretation:
"What happens to me and my rank? I'm a Commander, but I'm also acting Captain of the ship because we lost all our captains now. I take the ship and so do I get to keep the Captain's chair? Do I have to give it away to another Federation/Starfleet captain in the future? We're going to find out all that when we get there."

I still think Burnham will be the Captain in S3. Her arriving in The Future a year ahead of the crew will give her time to be promoted to Captain in whatever form of Starfleet they have. And if "Captain" Georgiou is bumped up to Admiral, that means Burnham will be taking command of Discovery.

Ajala is very likely going to be the main "guest" star like Isaacs and Mount before him. If you look at the leaked S3 promotional banner and most of the other promotional materials, Ajala is seen in all of them with the main crew. What role his character will play specifically is up for debate, but I don't think there is a doubt he's going to be the main guest star.

This. This is where I'm at right now. Even if it's toward the end or at the end I think more then enough time has passed now and will pass given she's there for year before the rest of the Discovery crew arrive that she'll be in the captain seat by the end.

I still feel the most ideal situation will be for them to get their hands on two ships and Saru to be the captain of the other.

Discovery will be obsolete 900 years from when it was built. Would Starfleet, if it still exists, want to have any jurisdiction over a near thousand year old ship? We saw on Picard that he didn’t know how to pilot La Serena, which is only a few decades ahead of what he was used to. Why would they put a Captain from the 33rd century in a ship from the 23rd century and expect they knew how to use it?

I think it’s far more likely Burnham or Georgiou will be made captain, with Booker on board as a information source of all things 33rd century.

That doesn’t imply Ajala will be the next captain at all.
Well, I interpret it as meaning someone from the future will be the ship's new Captain. Since the new cast members for the season include Cleveland Book and the teenager, I find Book a more likely candidate to be Captain than the teenager.

Unless Starfleet is gone or in bits I don't see why a 900yo ship wouldn't get scrapped immediately so why would there be a new captain

We don't know the the state of the Federation or Starfleet if it still exist. Chances are the Federation could still exist but Starfleet is gone. The ship is just a shell. It's internals can always be upgraded. Technology could have stagnated in some ways and advanced in others. Make the tech stays older but because it's older it has some kind of advantage over newer tech because that newer tech is designed to go against other specific things. There is no reason to really could out the Discovery at this point.

Depending on the status of the spore drive, Disco is either an obsolete hull around a superior propulsion system, or a complete anachronism. My bet is that it is the former and there will be a retrofit of some new tech to make the ship viable. I expect the ship's weakness will cause the spore drive to be used again and that come the end of the season the ship will come out of spacedock with a refit and a new captain right before a WTF cliffhanger.

Agreed.

Also, there's nothing even remotely vague about Jones' comment, which is merely a spoiler-free statement about how jumping to the future changes Discovery's story.
