Darth Vader stand-in..

Anderson was a master swordsman and fight director who wanted the fights to be both believable and exciting at the same time, IMO. Aside from Star Wars (Episodes V and VI), He worked on a couple of James Bond movies, the Zorro movies featuring Antonio Banderas, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

While the lightsaber battles in the Star Wars prequels (staged by Nick Gilard) are a lot more acrobatic and fancy, I always thought the two battles between Luke and Vader in the original trilogy were kick-butt too.

RIP, Bob Anderson.

The PT fights lacked any real dramatic oomph, largely because of the poor writing (I can't care about a fight if I don't care about the fighters) but also because there was too much technology getting in the way.

When the characters flip around like grasshoppers, the sense of reality and therefore the sense of danger is lost. The OT fights felt like something real could happen at any moment.

I heard about this earlier. Very sad indeed. The original SW movies, the LoTR, and even the Princess Bride had some great fights in them.

RIP :(
Princess Bride was the last great swordfighting movie. IIRC the Westley/Inigo duel at the top of the cliff is the longest swordfight in movie history [and one of the best].

I can only imagine being one of Bob's grand-children and sitting on his knee for stories.

"Gramps, in a fight between Errol Flynn, Darth Vader, James Bond, Zorro, and The Dread Pirate Roberts, who would win?"

RIP Blademaster.
