Spoilers Darkest Episode of Star Trek - Opinion Video

(Spoiler warning for every series, including Picard and Discovery)

I just watched this, and I thought it was really great. The episode he chose actually makes a lot of sense and almost changed my mind, but in my opinion the darkest episode(s) is TNG ‘Chain of Command’. The torture scenes always get me.

Good video...I actually agree with his choice, but I think he underplays the darkness of TWOK and NEM in this video. Those movies have some pretty heavy lifting.

I think elements of Mortal Coil are quite dark in how Neelix has to face in his loss of religion, his despair at what he sees at lies perpetuated on him to give him comfort after his whole family was killed in the war and nearly ending his own life by suicide. At the end he's barely hanging on but decides to stay alive for his extended family.

"Course: Oblivion" is what came to mind when I saw the topic title. Other stories get quite dark, but with some hope for the future at the end. The "Oblivion" protagonists find out everything they believe is a lie, set their sights lower & lower and still fail repeatedly, and die alone and unacknowledged.

I'm surprised "MORTAL COIL" wasn't mentioned. When he put "HARD TIME" as the final choice, I can see why, but to say that was the only time a lead was put to the brink of suicide was incorrect. Neelix nearly beamed himself into oblivion because of the events of "MORTAL COIL". He was put through the wringer there, not to mention his past has a LOT of tragedy in it.

I do agree with his assessment that VOYAGER got really dark many times... what the Vidiians do to other species, erasing entire species and civilizations from existence in "YEAR OF HELL", using the crew as killing mannequins in "THE KILLING GAME", Torres self-mutilating in "EXTREME RISK", what the Equinox crew did, the 3 former Borg ending in "SURVIVAL INSTINCT", what Icheb's parents did to him... there's more, of course, but there is ample proof that VOYAGER did some very dark things.

TOS dipped into darkness more often than people think, too, but that was acknowledged in the video. And we have to remember that the era it came out was a factor in how much darkness can be really shown.
