"Damn. I hate when I do that." Imortal Coil Question

Okay, so I just started Immortal Coil. I've really been looking forward to this book and the Cold Equations series. Anyway, early in chapter one we meet Rhea McAdams. So as I'm reading I wonder if she was an extra who was assimilated in First Contact. So I google her name to see a photo and I get the Memory Beta page on her. First sentence about her was a HUGE spoiler. All of you know what I'm talking about.

So did I just spoil a huge part of this book for myself? I feel like I kind of read the last page first.

If you're referring the what I think you are, it's a pretty big spoiler, but there is still quite a bit of story around that. If you're considering stopping, don't. Even if you know those spoilers, it's still a damn good book that is worth experiencing first hand.

Yes I've done that to myself several times as well. I guess it's better than someone else doing it to you.

On a related note, I know I read Immortal Coil when it first came out, and I plan to re-read it and Cold Equations prior to The Light Fantastic coming out this summer. Without spoilers, can someone advise me if there's any other books in this story that I should be rereading as well?

She really is a great character. You just got one surprise a bit early.

I reckon rewatching "The Offspring" and "Inheritance" (TNG) and maybe "What are Little Girls Made Of?" (TOS), but I also dug out my copy of the novelization of "The Questor Tapes" by DC Fontana. (One fudge required.)

I know exactly what you mean. I've recently returned to Trek-lit after many years away and find the I often need reminders of people, places, ships, etc. In some cases, it may be twenty years since I last watches an episode referenced in a novel that I'm reading. Therefore I keep my iPad handy and jump on Memory Beta often. I've had some minor spoilers, but nothing too drastic - yet.

Thanks. Seems like a pretty big spoiler though. Frustrated, I started The Fall series instead of Immortal Coil. But I really don't want to give up on it. I'll trust that it is one spoiler among several. It just seemed like knowing who did it in an Agatha Christie. No point in reading the book once you know.

Oh, there's definitely a lot more to Immortal Coil than just that one secret. And it's essential reading prior to Cold Equations in any case. (Well, technically CE explains what you need to know, but you'd still be missing out on a very worthwhile experience.)

Actually, if that were true no one reading an Agatha Christie novel would bother seeing the many film and TV adaptations.

I once read the movie-cover version of "Death on the Nile" - and loved it - and my huge surprise when I went to see the motion picture at a revival screening a few months later was that I had two actresses/characters switched in my mind.

Definitely give "Immortal Coil" a fresh look. It has lots of TOS and TNG easter eggs, but none are essential to know in advance. It's my favourite Data novel and I cannot believe we eventually got a trilogy followup - and (soon) a sequel from Jeffrey Lang!

Oh! How did I manage to not see the cover to "The Light Fantastic" until now?

You could read The Questor Tapes by D C Fontana. It's not a Trek novel, but it is relevant.

Mani? Been a while!

I've finally got the Cold Equations set assembled so will start those soon, be a fun follow-up as I only read Immortal Coil a couple of months ago.
