Dad's Army: The Movie (2016)

For those of you that remember the original series, this movie is sure to be a delight; it opens on February 5th in the UK (I'm not too sure about anyplace else in the world.) I'd love to see that, as I know a little about this series, but I wonder if others not from the UK will?

Well, it looks as if Hell's frozen over, and the UK film industry's like the U.S. one in making movies based on old TV shows (so does that mean we'll be seeing Danger Man and other '60's/70's shows from the UK on the big screen? A Blake's Seven movie? Only time will tell.)

Saw the trailer for this before SPECTRE.

Having grown up on the original, I'm really not sure about it. It seems to be played for very gentle laughs indeed, some of them rather silly that you can see coming, and if this is possible, it's probably tooquintessentially British old school humour.

The cast seems perfect, even if Toby is arguably a little too young for Mainwaring. If the scriptwriter is as good as the casting director, I'll definitely check it out. I think the original series is an utter masterpiece.

I saw the trailer before Spectre and I didn't really like it but Dad's Army is one of my favourite series of all time so I'm hoping the film is good. The cast has me hopeful, although just in the trailer Toby Jones seems to lack the...haughtiness that Lowe brought to the role.

I loved the show and the cast is brilliant, but somehow I'm not feeling anything for the trailers. I'll probably give it a go when it comes out though.

And don't tell him your name, Pike!

More pompous than haughty -- he was a bank manager trying to climb the social ladder and obviously envious of Wilson's upper-class upbringing and demeanour. Mainwaring's pretensions, airs, and graces were pasted on rather than a product of immersion from a young age. I doubt an American audience would understand the nuances of the British class system at all. I think it's a mistake if they have made his wife Elizabeth visible as the trailer suggests. Tom Courtney as Cpl Jones seems miscast as does Michael Gambon as Godfrey. Also it seemed pretty obvious that CZJ is the German spy laying a honey trap.

She's supposed to be a reporter doing a story on the Home Guard. I heard an interview with Tom Courtney on the Kermode/Mayo show a month or two back and he let something slip that would seem to suggest
she is a Nazi spy

Had I been the producer,I would have moved heaven and hell to cast Michael Palin as Jonesey.
Still I will go see this.

Trying to recast Dad's Army and recapture its magic is impossible - utterly pointess. I think they might have pulled it off !

If this works, get them to film the three lost episodes and the several special 'shorts' !

Did any of you guys go to the stage version that toured a few years back? IIRC, Leslie Grantham (Eastenders' Dirty Den) played Walker.

I thought that was obvious from the trailer? I doubt it will be much of a secret in the film.

Only four years in it.

^Wow, hadn't realised he was almost 50 and the late Arthur Lowe a mere 53 when the original run began. But Toby has a slightly impish quality that makes him appear a little more youthful (IMHO), while Lowe seemed like one of those men who were born middle-aged.

I'm sure Toby will still be very good, of course.

I remember being shocked when I found out Clive Dunn was only 48 at the start of dads army.
