Current EMH?

If anyone is curious, as of Full Circle they are now up the Mark XIs according to Memory Beta.

There was going to be a cameo by a Mark XI decribed very much to fit Matt Smith in IFM, but I saw sense and got rid of it in the edit...

BOOOOOOOOO!!!!

it resembles Chris Ecclestone now, doesn't it?

It doesn't appear at all now.

So now we have to wait 14 years for him, right? ;)

I was never convinced that Emmett was "black." He was described as dark-skinned, but there are several ethnic types worldwide that fit that description, and I didn't want to assume the obvious. I was leaning toward South Asian in my own mind.
I feel like once there was a "who would you cast?" conversation on the old Psi Phi boards, and it came up that Keith imagined the same actor as Emmett that Marco imagined as Bowers. And someone quipped that Bowers could have been the model for the Mark IV. But I forget who the actor was.

In the fan audios I used to do, I used a clip of Paul McGann as the EMH Mark III.

I think Marco's choice for Bowers was Michael Boatman. The other most commonly mentioned candidate is Ving Rhames, and I can't see him being a candidate for Emmett. But then, I don't see Boatman working for him either.

Can't they just update the software without completely replacing the entire EMH?

I'd say no, since we're dealing with a bioneurally based neural-network AI. The "software" would be part of an integrated personality matrix and it would be hard to just cherrypick the things you wanted to change. Remember how much it disrupted the Doctor's program when he tried to rewrite his own code by adding or deleting subroutines.

I'd say no

However, the physical appearance of the EMH appears to be separate from the software used to run it, as depicted in Doctor Bashir, I Presume? - they used a hologram of Bashir and loaded it with the existing EMH's routines.

Also, RoJoHen, as for updating the software without replacing "the entire EMH"... how would you define "the entire EMH", given that the whole thing is software in the first place? Obviously changing the appearance of the EMH on each version is a design choice that was made. Perhaps people complained too much about Zimmerman's ego in making the first look like him, so he changed the design for the second version (and why, oh why, couldn't he have used a different model?), and after that, changing the look with the version could have been a new tradition.

^Yeah. It's like a browser redesigning its skin with each new version. It's to visually distinguish the newer product from the older models.

Although there's a bit more to it where the Mark XI is concerned, since it's the first female EMH, in response to complaints about Zimmerman's tendency to default to making male ones. (And I forget, have there been any nonhuman EMH designs yet?)

I forget, have there been any nonhuman EMH designs yet?

I'm fairly certain that no established EMH versions have been non-human-looking designs, but the security holograms introduced in Unworthy (or Full Circle?) were multiple species, most intended to look imposing.

Maybe each EMH model should be designed with multiple user-selectable "skins" of different genders and species. (In fact, why am I putting "skins" in quotes? If anything, it's more literally applicable here.) Maybe give them customizable features like an MMO avatar!

the mark 9 was female, not the 11.

and according to the mem beta page, the mark 6 had pale blue skin and a personality similar to the mark 1. source: ST Online.

Memory Beta is a bit off on that; Holographic officers have some kind of blue holo-overlay, but the actual hologram was rather ordinary. And voiced by Quinto.

They should have a Leonard McCoy EMH. "Dammit, I'm a hologram, not a doctor!" :D

Was done in one of the early Shatner books.

Or, better yet: A Dr. Rumack EMH from Airplane!.

EMH: Captain, how soon till we make Starbase 12?
Captain: I can't tell.
EMH: You can tell me, I'm your EMH.
Captain: No, I mean I'm just not sure.
EMH: Well, can't you take a guess?
Captain: Hmmm....Not for another two stardates.
EMH: You can't take a guess for another two stardates?
