Culture in the Future

I wish we had been given more clues as to what the popular culture of the 24th century is like. All those allusions to classical music and literature lead me to believe that, by the 23rd century, humanity has gone through something of a classical revival, in which all the great novelists and composers of the 17th-19th centuries have become hugely popular again. Perhaps by the time of Trek, culture has therefore become more refined, less vulgar, and therefore so too have tastes.

Also, I've always found certain characters predilection for 20th century technology, movies, etc. a little over the top. ENT should have had the crew talking about some of their favourite 21st century movies or something.

We know the genre exists, anyway--at least in the Cardassian Union, in a novel called Meditations on a Crimson Shadow. We do not know what exactly the science-fiction aspect of this novel was, though.

For a novel to be considered scifi, does it really suffice that it simply takes place in the future? I'd rather go for something like "speculative fiction" there. Or "fiction" for short.

Rock and Pop bands of the 24th century, it'd be nice if we had one scene where we came in and saw Wesley, Jake, or Naomi etc listening to there favourite pop or rock band or maybe even a few of the older characters to see what they listen to instead of 19th/20th century classical. For that matter what would 23rd/24th century classical sound like?

Well, we don't really know anything about the plot of Meditations. It could well involve some sort of futuristic technology (at least from the viewpoint of Cardassians whenever it was written), but I don't think Garak ever spills any details. It could well be any of the things you describe, but I thought he specifically called it science fiction...

They should be eliminated now... not just because they've become junk food, but what goes into them is sketchy from the "what part of the animal" did it come from, the "what animal did it come from" and the "what went into the animal" standpoints.

i know, i was paraphrasing my own fan-fic. a Vulcan female castigates her human male mate for eating burgers and he replies something on those lines.

You can grow meat in a vat nowadays. Not quite up to spec as yet, like texture and that sort of thing. But in the future, it's hard to imagine anybody having an ethical aversion again eating meat. Overconsumption would still be an issue, but not eating itself.
