CSI "Trek" Episode

TigerOfDarkness

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
I imagine this has been discussed before, however last night there was a CSI episode set at a sfi-fi convention on UK TV.

The episode featured a few pastiches of bits of TOS - mainly The Gamesters of Triskellion and the Orion slave girl scene from The Cage.

Anyone watch it?

Yes, I saw it last night. As a BSG watcher also, there were probably more familiar faces from that show, but the scenes themselves had quite a few nods to episodes of the original series of Trek. It had it's fun moments:)

And Liz Vassey, already one of the most beautiful women on TV, looked incredible in a faux-Trek uniform!

I love that it was Ron Moore who reacted to the reboot with a big "You suck!"

You betcha! One of the best parts of the show happened before the episode aired. It was the commercial that even used the font of type used on Classic Trek.

I felt like they were laughing WITH us instead of laughing AT us, which has been my thoughts about one of the sit-coms these days.

I have never watched this show before, but I had to check this episode out.

Many BSG people cameos, caught at least Grace Park in 2 shots, thought sure I saw Allesandro Julliani in 1 shot, and of course Kate Vernon was the murderer. Another VERY nice touch was Joshua Cox from Babylon 5 playing the "Kirk" character!! :rommie::techman::bolian:

The Ronald Moore thing was great, too.

Overall I was laughing through quite a lot of it, all the ridiculous stuff from Gamesters and The Cage was hysterical.

I love the fact that the old show was pure 60's trek and the redux was PURE new school BSG. Very nice! :rommie: Very clever on the part of the creators of this ep.

The Wire ruined all shows of this type for me forever, so I'm not inclined to watch any more eps, but I'm glad I watched this one! Loved it!

Bri :rommie:

The writers of the episode, Naren Shankar, David Weddle, and Bradley Thompson, are all former Trek producers -- Shankar on TNG, Weddle & Thompson on DS9. And the two CSI characters who were portrayed as the biggest fans of the Trek-like show, Wallace Langham and Liz Vassey, have both guest starred on ST, Langham as the holodeck character Flotter on VGR and Vassey as an amnesiac crewwoman in TNG's "Conundrum."

He was Flotter?!!!

So how did they incorporate the old show with the new? I feel like I may of saw a promo for this on TV...but I don't watch any of the CSI shows....is this the show with the guy from buffy the vampire slayer...angel? They recently did a trek show on that program too....

David Boreanaz (sp?) is in Bones.

This was a great episode. And Moore's cameo was priceless, as the fan who "leads the charge" against the re-imagined Astro Quest:

So how did they incorporate the old show with the new?

Not sure what you're asking. The episode revolved around a classic show called Astro Quest, a thinly veiled roman a clef for Star Trek. Langham's and Vassey's characters ran into each other at an SF convention and discovered their mutual fandom. The murder victim was a Ron Moore-like producer who had done a pilot for a dark, gritty, cynical, BSG-style reboot for Astro Quest, and the fans reacted poorly, which was a suspected motive for his murder. (This is why Ron Moore's cameo was so brilliant -- he was basically telling himself off.) Along the way, Langham's character, who has a crush on Vassey's character, had fantasy sequences that were loving reconstructions of scenes from classic Trek episodes (or theoretically Astro Quest episodes), with him as the toupee-wearing captain and her as various femmes fatales including a yeoman, Orion-woman Vina, and Shahna (or approximations thereof).

Since it was made by so many Trek fans, it was a pretty respectful pastiche. There were a few obsessed-fan characters, but it portrayed the whole gamut of audience reactions -- the devoted fans who dress up but are sane, competent people (Vassey & Langham), the folks who are outwardly "normal" but just like the show and know it well (Laurence Fishburne's character), the military vet who values the show's message of a peaceful future, etc.

Yeah that's gotta be it....FOX 5 is the network and it came on right before Hells Kitchen.....so while I was waiting for Gordon...they had a promo for Bones and it was a Trek episode...this was awhile ago...but I'm sure someone on here has seen it.

This is exactly what I was asking! Thank you for your thorough explanation, I appreciate that!! And this is one CSI I'd like to see!

Just to clear up any confusion, "BONES" (that other forensic show) also did an episode set at an sf convention this season. The CSI episode was better, though, and much more Trek-centric.

Somebody watches Hell's Kitchen!?

I'm not sure who this Somebody person is....do they post here?? But Cakes sure as hell watches Hell's K.....that's right...so when I say I'm about to go all Ramsey on ya...you'll know what I mean. :p

If memory serves, the same week that episode of Bones was on in the UK, there was Numb3rs episode based at a comic convention. In that case the lead guest star was Wil Wheaton (though not appearing as himself) :)

yes! it was great fun! Ron Moore makes a cameo as a fan.

I hadn't realised that! Thanksfor the info - that makes that scene even funnier!

"Astral Quest", actually, which is more clever. Astral = Star, Quest = Trek.

And possibly a reference to Galaxy Quest as well?
