Crossing fingers JJ Abrams doesn't let someone else direct sequel..

I don't know about anyone else who loved this film, but am I the only one who is extremely concerned if Abrams decides he doesn't want to direct the sequel to Star Trek?

The guy obviously has a great vision for filmmaking, and pacing, and making you feel apart of the story. Directors like him aren't on every street corner. I also believe there is a certain amount of feel and touch that would be lost for audiences if the sequel were to be guided by someone else. This series needs continuity. I don't think we as fans have ever gotten 2 GREAT Star Trek movies in a row. Why should we expect no less at this point?

If Paramount has brains, they will lock Abrams up to do a sequel and a third entry. I suppose a concession would be to have Abrams handpick a successor to direct the sequel, but outside of someone like Danny Boyle who has that extra creativity, I can't really think of anyone else who could make a proper second entry into this re-energized franchise!

Anyone agree?

Re: Crossing fingers JJ Abrams doesn't let someone else direct sequel.

I'm sure Paramount will cough up enough money for him to direct, but I believe it would work without him. TWOK worked with Nick Meyer who was a virtual unknown at the time.

You are not the only one. I was going to bring this up yesterday, but didn't get around to it. I think I don't even want to think about it.

Re: Crossing fingers JJ Abrams doesn't let someone else direct sequel.

The problem is I think we already have our "Nick Meyer" clone, and when Nick Meyer was handling old Trek movies they were always more than solid entries.

Do you think Spielberg might want to finally take a crack ad Star Trek? He was always rumored to have been in the running to direct The Motion Picture.

Re: Crossing fingers JJ Abrams doesn't let someone else direct sequel.

Yeah I think Paramount should pony up some cash for Abrams. The guy pulled off quite a hat-trick with the new film.

Re: Crossing fingers JJ Abrams doesn't let someone else direct sequel.

I hope for the sequel they get someone who wants to make a film without the silly stuff.

I would love it if Spielberg directed a Trek movie. That would blow me away.

As long as the same writers are on board.

It would be a disaster if Abrams doesn't direct the sequel, Paramount needs to get him signed up! Orci and Kurtzman as well.

As stupid as it might sound, in this case, I'd prefer Abrams.

It depends on which Spielberg showed up.

If "Saving Private Ryan" Spielberg showed up, it might be the best thing that ever happened to Trek.

If sappy/uber-sentimentalilty "ET" or "AI" Spielberg showed up, yuch!

He is very capable of making powerful, exciting movies(like JP or Indy Jones or Jaws). I would love to see that Spielberg make a Trek movie, because he does have it in him.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the ET type movie myself, it was cute as far as it went, but I just don't think that sentimentality would work well with Trek.

Re: Crossing fingers JJ Abrams doesn't let someone else direct sequel.

I heard Spielberg was actually on the set of this movie a couple of times and even helped direct some of the photography while he was there. I wouldn't rule him out, but I also wouldn't count on it happening...

Neither ET nor CE were my cup of tea. If I want real aliens, I'd rather "Fire In the Sky."

There are other directors who could do it, as long as Abrams picks them and produces. I trust him to pick somebody who understands the scale of the movies, unlike the last few clowns we've had at the helm.

Re: Crossing fingers JJ Abrams doesn't let someone else direct sequel.

I'd be happy to take a chance on anything Spielberg does. It would be a memorable Trek movie, regardless of how anyone ends up feeling about it.

(Yes, I'm quoting myself.) I totally forgot Spielberg did the Sci-Fi Channel's "Taken," the miniseries that won the Emmy in 2003.

I don't know how I forgot, because I bought the DVD set and watched it two or three times, after having seen it broadcast. It was first-class.

I'm not concerned.

Another director might not be quite as fascinated by lens flares and "cool" design choices.

Re: Crossing fingers JJ Abrams doesn't let someone else direct sequel.

But those are two things Abrams could correct. Spielberg would be too expensive, no?

Re: Crossing fingers JJ Abrams doesn't let someone else direct sequel.

I'd be fine if Tim Burton directed it. He'd probably make it in the same lines as Abrams did.

Me neither.

Abrams has got a pretty good track record of producing. Let us not forget the finest example of an auteur taking a back seat -

The Empire Strikes Back
