Croatia?

Considering the grief the BBC got for filming in Dubai (people complaining about the UAE government's human rights record, coupled with those questioning the financial sense of doing the production there), I'm not surprised they kept it quiet that they were going to Croatia. Still, pretty cool.

I still wish they'd take the plunge and properly film one in the US or in Canada. It's not impossible -- "Hustle" filmed several episodes in Hollywood and Vegas a couple years ago.

I wonder what's in Croatia that would be of benefit to a Doctor Who episode? Any 'alien' like landscapes over there?

Croatia is utterly beautiful. I was there a couple of years back. I wouldn't describe anything as particularly "alien" though.

well obviously, there is no place on earth that can look alien, by the very fact that its on earth, a place that looks alien has to look like something not of this earth, so the fact that its on this earth means that it does look like something of this earth.

Clearly you've never been to Utah.

is Utah not on Earth?

and yes im aware that ive said that we should try not to film alien landscapes anywhere on Earth, which kinda forces all sci-fi shows to be set on Earth.

Well according to the people who pay too much attention to this sort of thing there was a week in early August where there was no location shooting going on in Cardiff, so they could have gone over there then.

Wonder where in Croatia. I went there back when it was all still Yugoslavia, and there was a terrific cave system I visited that would make a wonderful location, but impressive as it would be, I doubt that's quite worth heading out there for...
Oooh... in Pula there is a near intact Roman amphitheatre, still used for pop concerts etc, which could double for the colliseum very impressively... (but CGI could probably do that too).

Yes, but my point is that the landscape of southern Utah is so bizarre looking that it looks alien. I'm certain that the alien landscapes that Bill Watterson drew for the Spaceman Spiff sunday strips of Calvin & Hobbess were inspired by Utah.

Hey anything that DOESN'T look like Wales is alien these days. :)

And technically they have filmed in the US. But only a few random shots in New York City.

I put alien in inverted commas; that was to imply the very point to are making.

Croatia is a lovely place with gorgeous landscapes, lakes, the sea, relatively preserved medieval towns. If it's been used as anything, it's probably for scenes set in the past.

What about Earth like planets? :p

I'm talking artistically, not literally.

Now look at a few of these images in the link below and tell me a Doctor Who episode would not have an alien 'quality' if filmed one of these locations.

well yes Earth can pose for Earth like planets, but is that really what we want from sci-fi?

and SOME of those pictures have an unearthly quality to them, but is that not more down to human ignorance of the beauty of Earth?

I get your point, but again I'm talking from an artistic point of view. Filming an Alien Desert in Dubai instead of a quarry or beach in Wales add to the dramatic presentation of the story. It makes the story much more 'visually' adventurous and add's an 'exotic' quality that could also reflect environments on other Earth like planets in a lot more visually impressive way then said quarry. CGI can do the trick too, but actual physical locations add to the realism. It's all about making something appear more 'epic' and foreign to the general audience.

I agree that filming in Dubai was better looking than a beach in Cardiff, but I would not call it alien like, as deserts are fairly common on Earth.

Of course adding things like 2nd moons in post can help, along with creating really unearthly creatures. Like the swarm creatures in PotD unlike the Tritovore in the same episode.

well, considering that we have no idea what possible habitable planets actually look, who is to say there are not places on them with deserts like Dubai or beaches like Cardiff! :p
