Great episode. The guy who plays Aaron Hotchner plays off a moving performance proving to a number of the fans that Hotchner isn't as robotic as he seems at times. Hotchner talking to his wife on the phone and listening to her getting killed makes me want to hug the guy. And when he has his final fight aganist the Reaper, I was cheering him up to kill the son of bitch for all the grief he has caused him.
I thought the interviews with members of the team was a nice touch and I found the woman conducting them switching from wanting Hotchner's head on a platter to giving him a break abrupt but understandable after listening to the team's accounts of what happened and seeing Hotchner himself scarred by his loss.
I really look forward to how they have Hotchner deal with his wife's death and the impact it will have on him and his relationship with the team and his son.

I absolutely loved this episode. Hotch has always been my favourite character, calm, collected, but also a loving family man... and in "100" Gibson absolutely shines. The conversation with Haley brought tears into my eyes. And I'm already looking forward to seeing how he's going to deal with his loss, taking care of Jack and doing his job.
I definitely found the scene of Hotch killing Foyet with his bare hands barely watchable - it practically physically hurt me to see him declining to such a degree. Not that I don't understand him because I do (although I don't condone self-justice - but I've never been in such a situation...). But here, he went against everything he's ever worked (and lived) for, and that's going to take a while to deal with.

I thought it was a darn good episode; the last phone call was fairly brutal to watch, especially by network standards.

I've only watched a handful of episodes (none with Patinkin) but this episode caught my attention even though I have no connection to the ex-wife because I might've only seen her once before.
Considering the kind of lives these characters lead -- trying to get into the criminal's mind in order to bring him or her down -- would they ever make a lead character snap and turn into a bad guy?

Has anyone heard of Gibson leaving the show? I really hope he doesn't because I want to see the aftermath happen on screen. Hotch'll probably leave the position as unit chief permanently to Morgan (would have been awkward to take over again, anyway), but I really, really hope this won't be the beginning of the end of Hotch in Criminal Minds!

I'd really recommend you start from the beginning of the series, if possible. The first 2 seasons contain some real gems - and I thought Patinkin added a very human touch to the investigation (not to mention that the show was focused more on interviews and interrogations back then than the hunt itself).

She got shot in an episode, somehow lost the confidence in her colleagues after that to watch her back - and ended up deliberately shooting a suspect that most likely would have gone free... after that she left the BAU. Hotch covered the whole matter up.
That was a rough one. I haven't seen a main character do that except in war movies. I don't see why he can't supervise in the office or be a consultant teacher from the Acadamy. Sort of like promoting McCoy on Law and Order the same can be done here. Its a large cast and while the chemistry might change a little they can still employ the actor and play to the PTSD the character has to have.
Its going on, on all basic cable networks. The same thing is happening on 15 year old Law and Order episodes.
