Crew of Captain Sulu's Excelsior

From The Captain's Daughter (at least the way it appears in the printing I have):

Quote:
"--You people were … are … my heroes. So when your previous number one, Commander Valtane, requested transfer off the Excelsior …"

"Valtane was a good officer," admitted Sulu, "but the crew never warmed to him--
"

"Yes, well … his loss was my gain.."
Is your printing altered like they did with the reprinting of the Rihansuu books?

My copy agrees with foravalon's rendering of the text -- Valtane, not Masoud. And it's a first printing. I can't imagine there would've been any reason why anyone would've changed it to make it consistent with The Fearful Summons. Indeed, there's no reason I'm aware of why the text would've ever been re-edited in any way, just reprinted.

Yeah... I probably remembered it wrong. I'm at college, and I didn't bring the book to my dorm... so I just worked it up from memory. My mistake.

However, as the quote states... it was Commander Valtane. In "Flashback", wasn't Dimitri a Lieutenant, according to the Encylopedia? (Memory Beta says Lt. Commander, but I'm pretty sure the book said Lt. j.g. Frankly, the lower rank makes more sense, considering how he shared a room with Tuvok....)

And David's book also says that he transfered. In the episode, Dimitri bit the dust. So, the Valtaine we see at the end of TUC transfered.

By the way... Fearful Summons wasn't the only book that said Masoud. The novelizations of TUC and GEN said it, too --and GEN gave the same characterization of "stiff" and "almost Vulcan-like".

Now, let me state for the record that it is not my intention to force my "brother" idea as canon. Far be it from me to do such a thing!

Rather, I am attempting to explain an inconsistency, until another such explanation comes out. After I start getting Trek books published (and I have my eventual eye on the Excelsior catergory....), I'll probably put this explanation in print. Until then, feel free to come up with reasons of your own, by all means!
