Crap computers on voyager

Captain Muz

Cadet
Newbie
Time and time again i've seen on voyager when they've got someone on board using the computer who does something they shouldn't:

Janeway: "Try and lock them out"
Kim: "I can't they've put a something blah blah blah "
(Excuse for: Sorry captain we're using windows, i couldn't lock him out even if I tried!)

can someone make a youtube video of this happening??? sooo funnny if someone could
:guffaw:

The technology in Star Trek is often as good or bad as the script calls for - making it somewhat inconsistent from time to time.

I know that the Borg often have their own type of pirate administrative abilities so we can rule out their access as being down to crap computers.

I would say its probably down to the person in charge of computer security, rather than the computers themselves. TNG had Data, who had the ability to process faster than most computer attackers, check out FC for an example of how fast (and better than Norton!) Data really is.

More often than not, the problem was down to the useless Operations Officer, who had to wait to be told what to do every time a problem came up instead of taking some initiative. It was always:

"Captain, I'm detecting an unauthorised shuttle launch."
"Seal the shuttlebay."
"Too late, they're gone."

or

"Captain, someone's making an unauthorised transport to the surface."
"Block it."
"Too late, they're gone."

or

"The Borg are accessing the deflector array."
"Block them."
"Too late, they've bypassed the security protocols."

Kim never thought to take action first, and then report: "Captain, someone has attempted an unauthorised transport. I've blocked it and alerted security." No wonder he never got a girl.

:guffaw:So true.

I thought it was more about how devious or superior the person or species hacking them was rather than a function of the computers. The computers were as good as they were. A set state. The best the could be for Starfleet at the point they left on their journey, much like each of our operating systems. There are people who could hack us. There are groups that could hack us. And there people and groups who probably couldn't even know how to navigate the menu... like the Kazons. (Did anyone else think they were a low brow version of the Klingons with really bad hair? Just wondering...)

I never thought it was Voyager, but rather the skills of whomever did the hacking.

Indeed... but we ARE talking about hacking into alien computer systems.
Unless your technology is superior to SF's, then it would be rather problematic to do everything at once.

Then again... if I recall accurately, I think the LCARS user interface was mentioned to be very user friendly and easy to learn.
