Counting on your fingers

I use my middle finger first. I like telling people they're number ONE.

On occasion I will but usually I do it by just "twitching the finger" whether in eye-shot or not and just "counting" the movement in my mind.

I do count on my fingers on occasion, starting with the index finger of my right hand. The thumb is last.

However, I occasionally count in binary on my hands. I showed my kids how to do it once, and they thought it was pretty cool that they could count to 31 on one hand and 1024 with both. My 12- and 10-year old daughters were most impressed and learned how to do it too. They love to show their teachers and classmates. (We generally very quickly go past 4 without drawing attention to it, for obvious reasons.) When they ask me if I'm a nerd, I have to answer yes.

Pfft. I count in hexadecimal with my hands.

So I am asking people here - do you count on your fingers, and if you do what method do you use? If you ever use number gestures when talking to another person, and if you do, what gestures do you use?
When I count on my fingers I often use binary.

I use American sign language (left hand only) for 0-9. As best I can figure, I use my left hand because the right is usually holding a mouse.

Yes, i do sometimes count on my fingers because i am an idiot.
Math is NOT my friend.

You shouldn't say that, it's more probably just a certain hardwiring that some people have and some people don't. My girlfriend is a walking encyclopedia of art history and literature, but she can't do basic math to save her life. Even things like calendars confuse her when she is trying to find out how many days are between two events. She is never sure what dates to include and she gets lost if she has to go past a month.

Me,I am a whiz at math, but I seem to struggle with other things like career, love, life. You know the unimportant things.:)

^^ I'm like that. I'm a pretty smart guy, with lots of knowledge and I can understand complicated concepts, but there's a black hole in my brain that sucks in numbers. Which is a shame, because I love things like quantum physics that would really be enhanced by a knowledge of mathematics.
