Could WATCHMEN have made more $ if released in the summer?

No - it is a very mature alternate-universe science fiction film. The studio behind it should not have expected it to have the more wide-spread audience appeal of a PG-rated feel-good superhero movie.

You give studio suits credit for too much intelligence. What they SHOULD expect and what their marketing-driven "concept in 10 words or less" thinking comes up with are two different things.

The other problem is that the length of 'Watchmen' made it difficult for theaters to show it that many times per day.
It doesn't really matter if there's no one in the theater to begin with.

What Watchmen needed was someone who was willing to do the rewrites for length and clarity the movie badly needed. I think Snyder was too dedicated to the source material to do it.

I must disagree. I had never read the Watchmen graphic novel, didn't really know anything about it beyond what I'd seen in the trailers, and I found the movie quite easy to understand.

I have read a rumor that Watchmen will run again for a brief time in theatres in July with the 3 hours 10 minutes directors cut.

Can we assume that the DVD would come out shortly after that? Does anyone know anything about future Watchmen release plans?

The DVD is where the Watchmen will likely make a lot more $$$
