Could there be SFU novels?

I'm not very familiar with the Star Fleet Universe (I've never played any of the games) but it seems just different enough from the mainstream Trekverse that it could make for some interesting novels. Has anyone ever tried writing one? Would this be allowed, under the terms of the SFU's license?

They seem to be doing just that, at least according to what I've read on the ADB website, and as reported by Nerroth, our resident SFB champion. :)

Are they planning on doing novels? The first two books they're doing are collections of short stories first printed in their Captain's Log magazine. As far as I know, all they've published so far is a limited prototype run of For the Glory of the Empire, which includes several Klingon stories. (I have it, but haven't read it yet.)

When Interplay released the first Star Trek: Starfleet Command game, some retailers gave away a bonus disc.

It's a curious thing, this bonus disc. It has the game's soundtrack by Ron Jones. And a track entitled "Duel of the Fates" by John Williams.

But that's not my reason for bringing it up.

The other curious thing on this bonus disc is that it has a dozen short stories on it set in the Star Fleet Universe.

I read one or two years ago. On my list of things to do, that ranked rather low.

I don't know if anyone knew they were there. I'd have assumed that this bonus disc went through approvals at Paramount, but how to explain the artwork stamped "Unapproved" or "Not Approved" by Paramount Licensing on this disc? How to explain the mysterious appearance of a Star Wars music track? And how to explain the SFU short stories?

It's an oddity, I'll give it that.
