Corona by Greg Bear

Garak Nephew

Cadet
Newbie
The recent passing of Greg Bear motivated me to go over his bibliography and I was surprised when I found out that on his early stages of his career he gave a shot at Trek fanfic. I seek the novel on ebay and I must say that find it compelling and engaging.
To some the technobabble might not have aged well, but that could be an unfair characterization. We don't seek classics to find accurate predictions about our predicaments but to extrapolate acute insight into the constant of the human condition. The novel speaks LOUDLY about how powerful TOS was to attract fantastic writers and intellectuals.
"To Corona's way of thinking, the only significant intelligence would be one which at least hoped to rejuvenate its world." (p.168)

Hi, @Garak Nephew , and welcome to the board!

Just to let you know, we don't allow embedded hotlinked images, unless it's from an image hosting service, such as Imgur, PostiImage, etc. (And you probably didn't notice this since you would have had the image cached, but hotlinked Wikia images don't typically show up for others anyway.) So I have converted your hotlinked image to a link.

Also, not a rules issue, but since I'm here, I should probably mention that professionally-published tie-in fiction, like Corona was, is not the same as "fanfic". I can infer from the rest of your post that you didn't mean anything negative by it, but we do have some professional Trek authors here in our TrekLit community, and so this can be, understandably, a bit of a point of contention. So I just wanted to bring it to your attention. :)

I have read Corona at some time in the past, but to be honest, it's been a long while, and I don't remember a lot of it. IIRC, though, there were a few jokes about it at the start of the pandemic... :)

Again, welcome to the board, and I hope you enjoy it here!

Thanks for the clarifications on the rules on inserting images, I am just riding the newbie waves here and some flops are deem to happen.
On the use of literary criticism terminology, I understand the difference between tie-in fiction and fan fiction; I was in the industry and published book reviews for more than 20 years (in Spanish, though). I guess my comment was more ironic or cheeky when I said that Bear was a fanfic writer, as in saying "look, he was one of us". Maybe I should have used quotations with "fanfic". Bear was a great writer that just happen to be a Trek fan.

As I am wont to say on PIPORG-L when I see a newbie's first post,

Welcome to the squirrel-cage, and look out for the nuts.
