So, a little while ago, I heard a rumour that Napalm Death was coming to town.
I'm sure most of you have never heard of Napalm Death. They're a veteran gindcore band who've been around for about twenty years now--real elder statesmen of the extreme punk/metal scene. They seem to have caught a second wind in midlife, and their last five albums (including this year's Time Waits for No Slave) have been really good--some of the best in their discography. As the saying goes, people who like this sort of music, like their music a lot.
Anyway, when I heard this rumour, I chuckled and thought, "yeah, right, I'll believe that when I see it." I live in Sudbury, Ontario--a small city in the trackless wilderness of the Canadian Shield. Not in the middle of nowhere, perhaps, but definitely on the outskirts of nowhere. You can actually see nowhere from the top of the Superstack.
I was sure that the cost just to drive or fly out here would eat up any money they could make from a show. I was sure that the closest they would ever come to Sudbury would be Toronto.
Then, yesterday, I was walking down the street, and saw the poster: Napalm Death, in Sudbury, on 15 April. Fuck me gently with a chainsaw.
Needless to say, I'll be there--much to the amusement of the crowd, I'm sure. Who let the middle-aged university professor with the earplugs in here? Christ--I may have to buy a pair of jeans and a black t-shirt, just for the occasion. Ten years ago, that was all I wore: now I don't think I own any.
Have you ever had this happen to you? Had one of your favourite bands just roll into town, unexpectedly, out of nowhere? I'm sure not everybody here lives in a major urban centre.
