Concerts You Never Expected to See

So, a little while ago, I heard a rumour that Napalm Death was coming to town.

I'm sure most of you have never heard of Napalm Death. They're a veteran gindcore band who've been around for about twenty years now--real elder statesmen of the extreme punk/metal scene. They seem to have caught a second wind in midlife, and their last five albums (including this year's Time Waits for No Slave) have been really good--some of the best in their discography. As the saying goes, people who like this sort of music, like their music a lot.

Anyway, when I heard this rumour, I chuckled and thought, "yeah, right, I'll believe that when I see it." I live in Sudbury, Ontario--a small city in the trackless wilderness of the Canadian Shield. Not in the middle of nowhere, perhaps, but definitely on the outskirts of nowhere. You can actually see nowhere from the top of the Superstack.

I was sure that the cost just to drive or fly out here would eat up any money they could make from a show. I was sure that the closest they would ever come to Sudbury would be Toronto.

Then, yesterday, I was walking down the street, and saw the poster: Napalm Death, in Sudbury, on 15 April. Fuck me gently with a chainsaw.

Needless to say, I'll be there--much to the amusement of the crowd, I'm sure. Who let the middle-aged university professor with the earplugs in here? Christ--I may have to buy a pair of jeans and a black t-shirt, just for the occasion. Ten years ago, that was all I wore: now I don't think I own any.

Have you ever had this happen to you? Had one of your favourite bands just roll into town, unexpectedly, out of nowhere? I'm sure not everybody here lives in a major urban centre.

Sure. July 1985, right before my senior year in High School, I was working the morning shift at a restaurant and during a break I was reading the paper and saw the Weird Al was in town that night. I figured what the hell, so I called a friend and asked if he wanted to check it out and we ended up going. It was actually pretty fun.

Napalm Death are coming to Canada? I'll have to see if they're coming to Saskatoon! I can't believe they're still together - they were a band of my (latter) school years

Not that I'll be able to go, but it'll be fun to find out!

I like Napalm Death's 90s-2000's stuff much better than the 80's material, which is virtually unlistenable IMO. Fear Emptiness Despair is a great album.

The year Pearl Jam did their Canadian tour and came to our little Kitchener, Ontario blew me right the fuck away. To hear Eddie Vedder drunk slurring Kishner was awesome. Great show.

Sadly, no. The Canadian cities in which they are scheduled to play are Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City--and Sudbury. :wtf:

The more I look at their touring schedule, the less sense this makes. They are playing in Rochester, NY on the 14th, Sudbury on the 15th, and then Worcester, MA at the New England Metal Fest on the 17th.

But I am not complaining. :techman:

Hearing about Blue Öyster Cult coming to town via a local heritage festival in 2003. They played the same festival last October.

Had a good time at both shows, especially the 2008 appearance. That concert came about 2 or 3 weeks after the conclusion of a great misadventure in life and I was feeling drained. Thanks to Blue Öyster Cult and the opening act (Foghat), I was rejuvenated through the power and glory of that force in the Universe we call Rock and Roll. Damn, that was good.

ya know, I never figured i'd ever get to see Hendrix at woodstock, what with being born in '84 and all, but damed if I didn't get to what with inventing time travel

Would this time machine happen to be in the shape of a Blue Box or a Delorean?

Thanks for a good laugh. :guffaw:

I went to Germany to see Rammstein, partly cos I wanted a holiday and partly they're the sort of band who'll do a UK 'tour' that only ever consists of Birmingham, Glasgow, London and Manchester.

5 months later they came to Cardiff, a 10 minute walk from my house at the time.

Never thought I'd see Incubus or Tool in Cardiff either. 2004-06 was a real purple patch for us. Since November 2007 I've seen nothing even remotely like it.

I never thought I'd get to see Faith No More, but now they've reformed (still without Jim Martin though) and they're headlining one of the days at the Download festival this year. :D

A friend from high school called me a few years ago and told me that Yes was playing at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach. That was a fantastic concert that I never thought I'd see.
