"Concerning Flight": my comfort food episode

Good afternoon.

Are any of you keen on "Concerning Flight"? This episode may not sport the most robust script and there's little to no impact as far as the overall story is concerned, but I find it to be highly rewatchable. John Rhys-Davies' acting is always a treat; he and Kate Mulgrew play well off one another. Also, it's great whenever Tuvok gets a fair amount of screen time in a non-Tuvok episode (the way he does here). Finally, there's an unexpectedly funny line from Tom ->

PARIS: I feel like we've just been mugged.

Certainly, I can see why you would regard this episode as you do... it's not brilliant, but it's fun in it's own way. I guess I have a few episodes of this nature as well...

"Demon" is another example: I really dig its slow-burn air of mystery, the almost (but not quite) uncanny valley alien perspective, the score and the set pieces that work despite their limitations.

I remember Tuvok wears his Mirror Universe counterpart's outfit in this.
My comfort food episode is "Latent Image."

I like "The Q and the Gray" myself. I mean, John de Lancie, Suzie Plakston, and a super adorable puppy, all in one episode.

You had me at "Suzie Plakson". Or, rather, Suzie Plakson had me at Suzie Plakson.

Just watched Concerning Flight the other day. It is a fun episode. Leonardo should have stuck around for the rest of the series.

The episode kind of weirds me out because the portrayal of Davinci feels like it comes more from a children's show where the characters went back in time than anyone who really lived in his time period. And Janeway either doesn't know or doesn't care because of her historical wish fulfillment fantasy.

Alas, it couldn't have been cheap to cast John Rhys-Davies for future appearances :sigh:.

I think more than a few of us might recoil if full "historical accuracy" were enabled with some of our historical heroes.

Literally just watched this one yesterday and despite a few bits it's a fun show. Comfort food is a good way to put it

Love seeing Da Vinci's enthusiasm for all the new to him technology, especially him demonstrating the phaser.

Ignoring any real world things like casting, money etc, and only 1 mobile emitter - it'd have been cool to see Da Vinci on the bridge at least once imo. It'd never have happened, but still, just thinking out loud.

Nice little episode - not an 'event' episode or one that particularly stands out but yeah I get why you'd like it. John Rhys-Davies is always a win and he had a nice chemistry with Kate Mulgrew.

The site-to-site transporter isn't quite as bad as the combadge-sized unit in Nemesis but it doesn't 'feel' right in my opinion even within the fantasy realm of Star Trek.

Also the computer hardware is a bit on the large side isn't it? I'd have expected starship computers to be small, decentralised affairs rather than a huge single unit like that.

But yeah nice episode.

Rhys-Davies is fun as usual, otherwise I consider it a rather "meh" episode. I appreciated the mention of Kirk meeting Flint.

^^this. The episode is good, but not great. Nor is it bad.

Rhys-Davies pretty much chooses his roles well. He and Mulgrew are great together, which helps rather a lot. Worthy as a semi-regular, but how much could the writers do?

The Center Seat: 55 Years of Star Trek episode covering Voyager seemed to think he was Janeways romantic interest. :wtf:
