In case anyone thought those Part 1 and Part 2 releases were it, 2 Entertain has announced details of the Complete Season 6 DVD and Blu-ray box set releases for North America (presumably the UK release info will follow shortly). Release is scheduled for Nov. 22 for the full season box, a couple weeks after the release of Part 2 for those who want the no-frills version.

The extras haven't been announced yet, but it's assumed Confidential Cutdown as usual will be included, plus they have confirmed that the set will include A Christmas Carol. No word yet whether the Comic Relief mini-episodes or the school-written mini-episode running Oct. 1 will be included, tho.

There was never any doubt that there would be a complete box set. The half season discs were replacements of the vanilla 2-episode DVDs that have been released in the past.

Well I guess they can kiss sales of the Part 1 and 2 boxes goodbye.

Not really. As Allyn points out, this has been done every season in the past. In the UK past seasons were split up into 4 "vanilla" sets, and the 2009 Specials season saw the individual stories released as individuals and as a box set.

There are folks who don't care about the extra features. And the full-season box will be more expensive than buying the two individual sets (and A Christmas Carol) separately. So for folks who don't want to spend the extra, the individual sets are a good option. Plus there are fans who'll buy everything, too.

2 Entertain wouldn't be doing the split sets if they didn't know they would sell. And there is no "double dip" accusation to be made in this because they've always done this, since the series began in 2005. There was slight doubt whether they might only do the split set this year, but that was laid to rest once it was announced Part One would have minimal bonus features.

Right now the only uncertainty is whether the bonus features on A Christmas Carol (a full-length Confidential and the Proms concert) will be included, as 2 Entertain did indicate back in January that it could not guarantee all the features on the individual release would make the box set...

The BBFC has now issued a list of clearances for a number of items that are expected to be released in the box set, including the Comic Relief mini-episode, all the prequels for Series 6 (there's going to be one more released prior to the finale, apparently), and what appears to be FIVE mini-episodes/additional scenes made for the DVD/BD in the same style as last year's Meanwhile in the TARDIS. No word on that mini-episode airing on BBC Three on Oct. 1, and since they would have already been cleared by the BBFC this can't be seen as indication whether any of the already released items like the Proms concert special will be included.

Awesome...and from that article it seems we will get commentaries. I really hope they're regular audio commentaries. I found the video ones annoying.

Oh...yay. I've already bought the vanilla releases of A Christmas Carol and Season 6 Part 1 and I find out the box set is going to include more Meanwhile in the TARDIS minisodes. *Sigh*

^ Yep. This is why I ignore the vanilla releases and just wait for the box set which I know is going to be released after the season is concluded.

And here I am with Christmas Carol and Season 6 part 1 already, like a sucker. I don't really care about the extra features, anyway.

It would be nice if the BBC America documentaries, like "Doctor Who in America" were included on the boxed set.

Everyone knows the box sets have more. And we knew a Season 6 box set was coming nearly a year ago. If it's any consolation, the official list of features in the box set indicate the Doctor Who at the Proms concert is not being included, so there's an incentive to buy (or keep) the A Christmas Carol standalone (it doesn't appear the Confidential for the special is included either, so another reason to shell out the $12 or so for the standalone). If you bought the regular-series vanillas expecting that to be it (even though the series has been releasing these types of pre-box issues since 2005), oh well! I admit there were a couple of doubts early on, but once they announced the vanillas would only have the Monster Files featurettes I knew the main set was still on.

The only extra that's still a question mark is Death is the Only Answer, the mini-episode airing during Confidential on Oct. 1. It's not listed, yet one of the DW news blogs (Kasterborous, I believe), says it's expected to be included. It's only 3 minutes long so I assume it'll be included into the DWC Cutdown for the Wedding of River Song episode. I was hoping they'd have included the Matt Smith Doctor footage from the Crash of the Elysium interactive play, but no dice.

Also missing is the BBC America prologue sequence that runs before the opening credits over here. I assume (and really hope) they don't tack this onto the episodes on the North American version of the set, because I personally hate it, but it might have been an interesting curiosity piece for the British fans (like how the UK DVD release of The Avengers included the US prologue introducing Steed and Peel, which had never been shown in the UK before).

And only a week or so after the North American release of the box, Series 4 of The Sarah Jane Adventures hits DVD (and hopefully Blu-ray as well) over here. It'll be an expensive week, but worth it!

I'm disappointed that BBC America's documentary, "Doctor Who in America" isn't being included, though I suppose that 2|Entertain thinks that the cutdown Confidentials for episodes 1 and 2 suffice.

I also think that the North American prologue should have been included in some fashion, much like the Howard da Silva introductions were included as bonuses on the American DVDs for a few years.

Minor quibbles, though.

I have to say that I think the cover for the Series 6 Part 2 dvd is WAY cooler than the box set cover. But then, I'm a sucker for pyramids at night anyway.

^Agreed. While I never buy half-season sets of anything if I can help it, I do prefer the box art on the half-season sets for Season 6 over that of the full season set, especially for the pyramids on part 2.

Agreed. And I kinda like the prologue. I like that idea of a more traditional opening credits sequence for Doctor Who, like the fan-made versions cut to the Buffy & Angel theme songs.
But it really didn't make a damn lick of sense to include it in "Closing Time" when Amy isn't the companion anymore.:vulcan:
