Colored Pencil Portrait: Tekeny Ghemor

Nerys Ghemor

Vice Admiral
Admiral
So I noticed while I was going through my art supplies that I had this grey paper on hand...and that just screamed for me to draw a Cardassian.

I decided to do a colored-pencil portrait, and given that my portraits have a tendency to look like they're staring at me as I work, this ruled out slimeballs like Dukat. So I went for the most non-slimeball Cardassian possible: Tekeny Ghemor. :)

I know there are errors in this (I may have goofed the eye color...but I kinda like the effect, so...artistic license? :cardie: ), but it took me something like 14 hours to do and it's my best colored-pencil work to this date--so I'm still happy with it. :)

(And yes, I know the writing down the side is not Cardassian. It's from a non-Trek novel I'm working on, but I use it on everything I draw.)

Beautiful work, I especially like the eyes, they give hints of a more compassionate not so militaristic type Cardassian

A very nice piece. You really seem to capture the emotion behind the character. Well done.

VERY nice... I love it. Not nearly enough great Cardassian art out there. you captured the look and emotion very well.

Beautiful work, Nerys Ghemor! (I also love you username, by the way.)

We could use your talent in the Trek Art Comic Project. ;)

Thanks for looking, guys! :)

Computer and LRT: The emotion was one of the things that really drew me to the character. I got teary-eyed in both episodes he was in. I think part of why the actor did so well--though I conjecture--was that he could relate personally. From what I read over at Memory Alpha, Mr. Pressman spent a good deal of time in his life searching for family members lost to the Holocaust. EVERYONE except his father and aunt were wiped out. Can you IMAGINE that? No wonder he played Ghemor like he did...that was a character who lost a LOT to an oppressive regime--his daughter, his home, and God only knows what else once the Obsidian Order forced him into exile.

NCC-1701: I really appreciate your kind words! I'm afraid that me and the comic drawing style don't get along so well, though. I am entirely self-taught as an artist and I produce art far too slowly, between that, my job, and my writing, for me to commit to anything.

I understand that. (And I seriously need to stop trying to recruit people for the project all over the board.) However, I really love your style. And we don't even want just 'comic style' drawings. Every style is appreciated. Also, no-one has to post a full page. Really, one image is sufficient and would be very, very cool.

I'm doing it again, am I?

Yes, yes you are. ;)

Even if style wouldn't be an issue...I'm afraid I still wouldn't have the speed to keep up with a project like that. :-/

I saw this one at Sheezyart and considered joining just to be able to comment but as I have my art up on enough sites already (and hardly have the time to give my fellow artists there the attention I should), I decided against it.

More reason to make me happy you posted it here too.

Very nice work indeed. The shading is smooth and all the ridges come out very well without being overly pronounced. The detail and the reflection in his hair are well done. The expression on his face and the whole mood of the pic fit the character.
Great job! :techman:

Thanks, ZMistress! I'm glad you enjoyed it. And I appreciate your taking the time to provide thorough comments--that kind of feedback helps me as an artist to know what's working and what isn't.

So were you just surfing through SA at random or what?

No, I read in the "Day of the Viper" thread that you were working on the cardassian language and thought I'd check out your homepage.
Actually it was the first time I visited SA.

Ohh, I see. Well, thanks for looking. :)

My material for the Cardassian language--or my fanfics, which will all be part of a series I'll call Star Trek: Sigils and Unions--have yet to appear on the site because I'm still working on them.

I may end up posting The Thirteenth Order to the BBS when I get finished with that...but I'm still debating it, because I kinda...decide where I do like novel canon and where I don't. And Macet is doing something that for someone steeped in Cardassian culture might be seen by some readers as very difficult to conceive of, let alone get other people to follow in. So basically I dunno if I'm going to get flamed or what.
