Color Photos from 1910!

These are amazing!

Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky was a Russian chemist and photographer. He is best known for his pioneering work in color photography of early 20th-century Russia.

These images were taken in 1910-1912, this is what the world looked like 100 years ago! Seeing actual color photos from so long ago brings such a special connection to these people and places who have long been forgotten.

The first one is the man himself.

See, it just confirms that the world wasn't only in black and white! Beautiful pictures, and great camera work.

"Say cheese!" must be a more recent development. All of these people look like they want to kill the cameraman. ;)

The detail on some of those is better that I ever saw in polaroids from the 80's and 90's! What would the camera have been like that he was using and what kind of resolution did it have?

Black and white are both colors, so technically... :p
Black is the absence of color. White is a combination of all colors.

Does anyone know how these photos were made? Did color emulsions exist back then, or did the camera make RGB separations on black-and-white film (or glass plates, whatever) like the old 3-strip Technicolor?

While these are not really in color, it's still fascinating to see Titanic in color rather than it being a black and white photo or a full color painting.

These are part of a project to take Titanic photos and color them digitally. The site can be found here: http://3dhistory.de/wordpress/?page_id=1308

Here are some highlights.
