CNN - This is news!?!

Except the Britney Spears news item I mentioned earlier was listed at the top of the page as part of Latest News (and stayed there for a long time). I'm guessing the news item T'Baio mentioned was also like that (although I didn't bother checking at the time).

That's because the the news scroll on the main page is chronological. It updates as stories are added. It's not about the importance attributed to the story.
Ah, okay. I guess just assumed it was the latest "important" news.

Whether it's front page or not, I still don't think CNN/MSNBC/Fox should ever care that a woman in Boondocks, USA had quintuplets. I keep seeing those crap stories popping up everywhere. Not that it isn't rare, not that the family wouldn't consider it noteworthy, but why on earth is it being covered on a *national* newscast? I mean, seriously.

I think it may be because there are still people, perhaps some of them editors and producers responsible for story selection, who remember a time when it was noteworthy not only for the number of babies born together, but also for the fact that they all survived, which was not often the case in such births. That made it news -- witness the (identical) Dionne quintuplets, who remained near-celebrities well into adulthood (with some of the attendant negative aspects of fame, as well) -- though advances in medicine have now made a quintuplet birth not quite the big deal it once was.

^Well, I was just using quintuplets as a random number. Still, the point is well-taken.

But...national? (I just can't let it go. :p)
