First Look: Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino
Posted on Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008 at 10:22 pm by: Peter Sciretta

Warner Bros has finally started marketing Clint Eastwood’s new action drama Gran Torino. In the film, Eastwood plays a disgruntled racist Korean War vet named Walt Kowalski, who sets out to reform his neighbor, a young Hmong immigrant teenage neighbor (played by newcomer Bee Vang), who, as part of a gang initiation, tried to steal Kowalski’s prized possession: his 1972 Gran Torino.Walt ends up confronting prejudices that have isolated him. The poster shows Eastwood with his M-1 rifle in hand, standing in front of his Gran Torino.

Eastwood, who says this will “probably” be his last film as an actor, tells USA Today a little bit about his character:

“He worked on the line in the Ford plant and retired and had this one car he bought himself. It’s sort of a symbol of his days with the Ford plant. The M-1 is sort of a symbol of his days in the military. … He’s clinging to the memory of the war. You’ll find out when you see it, some of (the memories) are not as pleasant as others. That helps make him even tougher to get along with.” … “Walt helps him get a job and helps him toughen up a bit. (Walt) doesn’t work construction. He’s retired. But he gets the boy in through a buddy, an old crony. They take him in and try to show him how to handle himself in life.”

Warner Bros has also announced a December 17th release date for the film, which puts Torino in line for Award consideration.

Eastwood taking out a gang and performing a little of his own justice with the shotgun= Awesome

Obviously it will be a quiet movie. I'm not expecting Eastwood to use the gran torino to race the ricers in drift wars LOL

He's using the best batman gravely voice ever!

"ever notice how you come across somebody you shouldn't mess with?..........thats me"

I'll get the dvd. I hope there's no shocking twist(Million dollar baby) like the poor old man gets gunned down in the final minutes of the movie

Is it directed by Clint Eastwood too ? I loved Mystic River & Million Dollar Baby, which he both directed. Saw the trailer about 5 minutes ago on Apple Trailers and looks wonderful :techman:

I've been curious about this movie since I first heard of it some 6 weeks or more back. First I've heard it may possibly be his last movie as an actor, gotta love the caveat though.
I like most all Eastwood films, either dircted or acted. The only reason I've not bought Million Dollar Baby is its tonal change. This movie, for me, makes it one that doesn't have rewatchability--which is requiste for my DVD shelf. I like it but I've seen it.

I'm hoping Gran Torino will be one that meets my pre-requisite.

In all honesty, you could have used the term "Asian American racers."

To think that over 160 years since the first mass Asian immigration from China and Japan in the 1840's to the United States, Asian Americans are still seen as being "foreign" in mainstream America.

Give me a break...

I am so glad that Clint Eastwood is doing a film about how biggotted white America has to face up to their past sins for their mistreatment of Asian American citizens who live in our country (United States of America). Also, the Korean War happened 58 years ago, yet Hollywood has not tackled this subject like the way they have with a gluttony of World War II and Vietnam War films that have come out over the years. Plus, the Hmong are probably the Asian race that America knows the least about because their history, customs, and how they are represented in mainstream America (Yes, we Asian Americans are "Americans!") is not at all present in American mainstream media.

I am a Korean American who is proud that Clint Eastwood is making a film that is tackling this very issue. Extremely proud, and I will be one of the first people in theatres to watch this film when it comes out in December.

I'm hoping Gran Torino will be one that meets my pre-requisite.
I will be buying Gran Torino when it is released on DVD/Blu-ray.

^^^

Okay, thanks for letting us know, man.

I hope that this film will do for Clint Eastwood what The Shootist meant for John Wayne. :)

Clint looks like he can barely stand on his feet but I have to admit, that film looks compelling.

Well if this is going to be his last movie I'm definitely going to see it. I could watch Clint Eastwood in anything.

No! He's still got to play Bruce Wayne in Batman Beyond!!! :)

If James Coburn were alive he'd be great for old Bruce Wayne and Keanu Reeve as Terry Mcginnis

Like I said at the top, Eastwood has the best gravely voice for batman and we can understand him unlike a certain guy named bale ;)

I knew a Batman fanatic in college who wanted Charlton Heston for old Bruce Wayne.

Isn't Keanu a bit too old for Terry? I'm thinking more along the lines of Milo Ventimiglia, who acts just like Keanu, for what it's worth. :p

Damn you, Joker!

Plus, Keanu Reeves is part Chinese on his father's side. You can tell just by looking at him. So coupled with age (Keanu is 44) that disqualifies him from the running for a potential Terry McGinnis, altogether.

Sure, we have had a part-Japanese/part-caucasian Superman/Clark Kent in Dean Cain, but an Eurasian Batman is pushing it, unless there is evidence that old Bruce Wayne sired Terry through "co-habitation" with an Asian/Asian American woman.
