Clifton James, 1921-2017

J.T.B.

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Long-time character actor Clifton James has died at 95. "You know his face," as they say. He may be best known as J. W. Pepper, the Louisiana Sheriff who crosses paths with James Bond in Live and Let Die and The Man with the Golden Gun. He was also part of the John Sayles "company" in later years and had guest appearance on many, many TV shows. I always think of him for the memorable "spends the night in the box" speech in Cool Hand Luke. RIP.

I should also have mentioned: James was a WW2 veteran who earned the Combat Infantry Badge with the 41st Infantry Division in the SW Pacific.

Wow, 96...that's a hell of a good run. He was the quintessential "redneck sheriff"-character actor.
