Classic Battlestar Galactica To Be Released on Blu-Ray in Germany

Re: Classic Battlestar Galactica To Be Released on Blu-Ray

I apologize for the bump, but the original BSG is coming to blu-ray in the US as well, next May. There are two different sets:

The Definitive Collection, which includes both 4:3 and 16:9 versions

The Remastered Collection, which only has 16:9

These sets both include the original series and G1980.

Cool, a must get for me.

I'm curious what's "remastered" about them. It doesn't really say. I doubt they did a complete rework of the VFX like they did with TOS Trek. I recently just got the UK region-free version and everything was 4:3 on it that I could find. And aside from the theatrical release of the 3 pilot episodes, I don't know how the entire series could be in 16:9, as it was all made for NTSC television back in the 70's. I must be missing something.

And it irks me that they're basically putting out the same thing with two different sets of packaging at the same time, forcing the consumer to pick one and risk maybe not getting something that only exists on the other, or paying double to get both for completeness' sake. Reminds me of the nonsense that Paramount did on the multiple versions of Into Darkness, each with their own different features - a real fan favorite. Is this the way of things now?

Well, like I said, one set has both 4:3 and 16:9 versions, and the other has just 16:9. As far as I know, the actual assortment of material is the same on both sets. Only the aspect ratio is different.

And neither set has "new" effects like Star Trek TOS-R does. These sets are carrying the word 'Remastered' as it SHOULD be - just cleaning up the existing effects and stuff, not making any new ones. TOS-R doesn't use that term correctly, but these sets do.

I'm doubly pissed off. Firstly I'm getting the recently released Region B edition of the set for Christmas, only to find a still better version to be released 2015 in the US and secondly I'm pissed off at what could have been in terms of effects as illustrated in the link below. Check out what one of the people behind the VFX for Nu-BSG offered to do for TOS-BSG.

I'll be happy with the definitive set coming in May. Not a fan of new special effects for older properties.

^ After seeing that Digital Bits link, I'd be thrilled to see new effects. It'd sure beat seeing the same damn scenes a hundred times in every space battle...

Neither am I really, but also long as both are made available as was done with TOS (But unfortunately not with TNG), Then I don't mind it so much. That way I have a choice which version I wan to watch at any given time.

I am glad they are doing this- the original DVD collection had some pretty bad compositing in the SFX shots where each element had a uneven box around it. OK enough for television broadcast but on a hi-res monitor really stood out.

Such things may actually stand out more in Blu-Ray, warts and all. I don't think they're doing a Trek-style remastering of the film, more likely just a re-recording off original prints at a higher video quality, which will make such compositing imperfections even more blatant.

The theatrical version blu-ray released awhile back had some work done on it for sure.

The garbage mattes of ships in combat is far less pronounced. I believe they did basically a light dust off & contrast & color levels adjustment.
It looks to my eyes DNR free.

These new series sets (from every region) are all sourced from the HD masters made for the DVD release. They have the garbage mattes more visible.

Still though its better than nothing. I've seen them all (from the German Region B set) and they look great. Lots more detail on the costumes and a richer color palette.

Wait, they're charging $20 extra to get it in the original aspect ratio? Fuck that. I'll stick with my DVDs.

For me, "stock footage alert!" was as significant as "jump the shark" or "fake Shemp" in TV vocabulary.

It doesn't make sense to me to have 2 versions, when one has both aspect ratios.

And the price on either is a bit high. I'll get this on blu-ray for sure, but only after the price comes down. I have the "movie" blu-ray on my ebay wish-list and will be getting it soon.
