Classic Anime Fantasy/Sci Fi suggestions?

Well with TV entering break/good shows ending season I've started looking into some old school Anime, a number of fantasy ones which I’ve started already are Orphen, Record of Lodoss War, Rune Soldier & the Twelve Kingdoms. Just wondering if anyone had any other suggestions?

How classic are we talking here? Some quick ones that might fit the description are

Neon Genesis Evangelion (plus its movies, End of Evangelion, Evangelion 1.11, Evangelion 2.22)
Macross (the original, the movie remake, Macross Plus, Macross Zero, Macross F, and if you want to torture yourself Macross 7)
Ghost in the Shell
Mobil Suit Gundam

I'd say good from whatever decade, I've seen pretty much the popular ones of the last 15 years or so, there maybe good ones which didnt get noticed that i might have missed.

Try these:

Daphne in the Brilliant Blue (Be prepared to be highly entertained)
Gunslinger Girl (Be prepared to be greatly saddened)
Witchblade (Be prepared to be weirded out)
Ah! My Goddess! (Be prepared to laugh and go AWWW! a lot)
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (Be prepared to laugh your ass off)
The THIRD (Be prepared to get real deep about stuff)

You've seen all the well-known ones I might recommend. The above were things I've found out about just browsing anime sections and fan magazines.

Um, checked a tv schedule lately? Leverage, Warehouse 13, Eureka, Burn Notice and Futurama are all starting up over the next week or two.

Perhaps Bubblegum Crisis? Or Akira? Or (not anime per se) Wizards?

You really should give a list of what you've already seen that would help us.

I usually recommend either the Universal Century Gundams like the original Mobile Suit Gundam or movie trilogy, Gundam Zeta, and Char's Counterattack, there is also Victory Gundam I doubt you've seen that one.

There is Super Dimension Fortress Macross I prefer this version to Robotech. Another very old school classic mecha show is Armored Trooper VOTOMS if you liked the Zaku suits from the UC Gundam shows you'll like the mechs depicted in this series.

There is also Space Battleship Yamato the classic space opera anime that predates Star Wars and was used to make Star Blazers.

Popular how?

Give us a list.

Yeah list could be helpful

Just looking at my list of anime, I have over 300 shows and movies that I've watched. Going through that list and giving suggestions can be time consuming

Almost in all cases, the classic or originals are inferior to the more modern remakes or spinoffs.

Eva: Rebuild over the originals + movies
Gundam: Unicron, Char's Counterattack, F-91 over MSG. Z and ZZ.
Macross: Anything else with the Macross trademark is superior over the original series.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex over the original movie.

Yeah, I know the feeling, I have over 700 in mine.

I finally just decided to just post this whenever someone asks for recommendations. It's a list I made of all the stuff I'd rate a 9 or a 10 (Excellent or Masterpiece on ANN's scale). Although, keep in mind that some of those are sequels and shouldn't be watched until after you finish their progenitors, otherwise you might get lost or spoiled. That list there would probably be most helpful to the OP but he may have to do a bit of research to find out where to start if it's a franchise.

Let me know if you have any questions on any of them.

That statement is a MASSIVE overgeneralization and oversimplification I take issue with it because it infers that the older stuff that preceded it isn't very good and should be avoided this just isn't the case.

Indeed. In the franchises I have mentioned I found the remakes/sequels to be very good. That being said, that doesn't change the fact that originals were great as well. Its one of the rare situations where you can have your cake and eat it too

I wouldn't go as far as saying the sequels are always better either. Case in point Kiddy Girl_And was a mostly awful souless and vapid sequel to Kiddy Grade which in contrast, rocked.

However, chances are if you like something and they give you more of the same level of quality (which anime usually delivers on yes) then one would also be satisfied.

Did you check out the two Full Metal Panic sequels?

I would also suggest the Melancholy of Haurhi Suzumiya and Elfen Lied

Also the newest Evangelion movie (Eva 2.22) just came out fan-subbed a day ago, so you can also give that a shot

Theres also RahXephon which is sort of like an Eva Lite

Tsubasa Chronicles has had two OVA sequels. Tokyo Revelation which is one of the best animes I've seen and another good one but I dont remember its name right now

Also, if you liked Sora wa Kakeru Shoujo, you might be interested in Mai Hime and Mai Otome. It's believed Sora was supposed to be another installment in the Hime/Otome franchise and there are some aspects that they share
