City of Heroes/City of Villains Rant

Does anyone here play this MMORPG? This and The Sims 2 are about the only two PC games I have been playing solidly for the past few years. In fact, I've been a member player of CoH/CoV for nearly five years now that I've gotten tons of "Veterans Reward" badges within the game. However, lately I have found the gameplay to be frustrating to the point that I'm getting bored or tired of playing it. Sure, the creators have added many neat and special features through periodic updates, like new costume pieces and power sets, but I fear the game is losing its overall appeal.

First of all, solo play is not as fun or productive as doing a group mission with other players (that's where MMOs get their strength - from collaborative playing). Whenever I do a solo mission, there always seem to be dozens of enemies one or two levels higher than my character, and I CANNOT even land a freaking single hit. And the mission is set on "Heroic" (which is Normal/Easy), not "Invincible" (which is the highest difficulty level). I recall someone posting here awhile back that CoH had the worst hit points, and he was telling the truth.

Second, of the dozen servers where players can log in, only two of them (Virtue, for hardcore RPers, and Freedom) are actually busy and the most popular. So even if I wanted to play with a group and level one of my toons, it would be next to impossible to find a team because such servers as Victory, Justice, and Champion (where I used to log in and play) are mostly dead.

And lastly, I'm finding that the characters are only as effective as their power sets (attack, debuff, and defensive factors). For this reason and the previous one, some of the characters I've created are practically unplayable, and I've reached a dead end. For example, up until recently, I had a Level 27 Blaster (long-range attack) I created back in 2003 and had been playing on and off. Now Level 50 is the highest (then it starts over from the beginning with one of two different archetypes, Warshade or Peacebringer). On the other hand, I have a Controller (debuff/defense) I created just six weeks ago and is now on the low level 40s, not to mention a mid-30s Scrapper (Melee) I created months ago. Again, some power sets are stronger than others. Based on one's "archetype," the primary and secondary power sets are chosen.

So I'm thinking as soon as DC Universe On-line goes on-line, I may have to to say adieu to City of Heroes forever.

Do you know why this is? Have you tried slotting your offensive powers with the accuracy enhancement? I gave my bots several of those and haven't had a problem from what I remember.

I've played CoV off and on since release. Things about the game I like is the characters customization, it's almost infinite so no two players will look alike. I also like the archetypes I played a Robotics/Force Field Mastermind the only thing I don't like about it is it can get boring just standing there letting your bots do all the work, I love putting up the invincibility shield during a group wipe so I'll live when everyone else on the team dies. Playing solo can get very monotonous and boring so I recommend playing this game with groups it's much more fun. I played on Virtue so getting a team is easy, I don't know what it's like for other servers though. I might play Champion Online or DC Universe Online if they are good and hopefully being a superhero mmo instead of fantasy (boring) it will carve out its own niche and survive with a small albeit thriving community. Sadly any MMO that isn't WoW seems to have fail written all over it despite whether or not it's good.:(

I play on the Virtue server and my highest level toon is a level 44 blaster and did it virtually solo. The only real problem I noticed in the 20s was the tendency for my shots to go wide. Went with a leadership pick from the power pool to improve aim as well as the Aim power in the Energy Blast powerset. That plus medicine from the power pool so that you can get Aid Self and heal your hit points in the midst of combat without burning an inspiration. Top it off with physical from the power pool and bump up your health and endurance recovery rates. Having done this, my blaster character can dish out and take tons of punishment and is great fun to play. Not to mention that since they have released a Mac version early last month, I don't have to use Boot Camp and my Windows partition to play the game.

Never coul get into that MMO. I am a die hard Everquest 2 player myself. Started with the original Everquest and now play this. Play 95% of the time solo and love it.

Looking forward to the DC Universe MMO that is slated to come out in 2010 I do believe.

I played COH from opening day up until last year. what drove me away was how generic all of the missions were and the terrible, terrible grind it became after level 40. It will be interesting to see if Cryptic avoids these mistakes with Champions Online. Being a big fan of the original pen and paper version, I can't wait to dig into the point based character creation (which was also how COH was originally going to be instead of the stupid archetype system)
One of the best things about WoW is the quests actually have some story to them. In COH it always seemed like "insert villain's name here" has taken "insert hostage name here", you must find and save him/her.

The best part of the game has to be the character creation. I agree the missions are way repetive and you dont even need to get past say 20 and you have done them all. An over all story arc is there but its buried in the rescue hostage, rob bank, defeat bad guy missions. The new create your own mission in the next issue "Architech" might hold some promise if they truely allow you to do something original. I have heroes and villians on just about every server and I enjoy making them more than playing them.
