Actually it was the science officer who was Deltan in the novelization, not the helmsman.

Yes I know, but IIRC, the script did not attribute species to each crew member and Vonda was left to attribute them. I remember an interview where she said she had been given access to some set stills, plus the actual script, but not of that particular scene.

It sounds like a very interesting and provocative story, no doubt informed by Priest's own experiences of racism in the comics industry. I wish Paramount had gone for it.

EDIT: I just skimmed the script. I like Priest's practice of just dropping reference photos into the script where they're relevant. I'm going to have to remember that.
