Chinese tech firm unveils ‘robot companion,’ sparking debate over whether it's tech progress or threat to real-life relationships

Which comes in the wake of restrictions and bans on ai girlfriends.

But part of the problem is the for so long in china that boys where desired over girls and the you had the one child policy and the end result was a massive gender imbalance so now they turned to artificial means for companies.

I will believe it when I see it. I have looked at videos of "AI Girlfriends" which were glorified mannequins.
Some developers said AI would be in your home within 5 years, and people didn't believe them. But look where we are now. And yes, these are facts; China and Japan are very advanced in technology.

I have seen comments posted online. Seems some men think that they will get an android servant, which can do the tasks associated with house wives.

Something like Cherry 2000, or the Stepford Wives.
Exactly but there is a word for these videos BULLSHIT

A lot of this is in fact AI generated slop posing as facts. There is a video with over 103,000 views about robotic humanoids (female only) mind you replacing humans in China and I have no doubt some of these videos are coming out of China and not sure what the motivation for them is beyond selling bullshit. It seems a weird kind of thing to propagandize.

The closest thing to an android servant I have seen...is a Roomba.

They are reliable and do the job they are made for. Now if we could get Rosie from The Jetsons that would be neat, doesn't pretend to be human, does the chores asked and no more. But humans would mess that up too with some kind of weird fetish given half a chance.

As for the imbalance in China why can't men look for wives outside of China?

I do recall a web site that that promoted puppets as avatars. Instead of a glorified mannequin, imagine a puppet of Kermit the frog atop a computer.

Preferable to the mannequin....which is creepy in the videos.

Personally, though, I think if one wants an avatar one on a screen would be the best option.

But of course that is not what those men are looking for. They want an android substitute for a girl friend.

So what do you think? Do we get semi functional androids before AGI?

Before Artificial General Intelligence? I doubt it.

I think what I have seen is, at best, over enthusiastism. More likely hype. The technology just isn't there.

I can't say whether or not true androids are possible, but definitely not yet.
I agree... My comment was very much tongue in cheek. I watched the video in the OP and omg those things are effing creepy the way they follow you with their eyes and head
