Story here

Chinese bloggers are calling out state broadcaster CCTV over their air force training exercise story, citing the footage they used is actually from the movie Top Gun.

Maybe they should've used footage from something that no one saw, like Iron Eagle IV or that short-lived TV show Supercarrier.

Good luck collecting royalties, Hollywood.

It makes me wonder if, say, North Korea uses footage from "Independence Day" to convince the populace they've blown up the White House or something...

That's too awesome for words.

I knew there was something suspcious when the news footage said "Music by Harold Faltermeyer"...

Doh! Apparently this is nothing new. This happened in 2007 with China's state-run Xinhua news agency:

HIIIWAAAY TOOO THE DAANGEEER ZOOONEEE!!!!

Now I wonder if they'll try to sell the beach volley game between the pilots as the People's Liberation Army Games.

In 2002, the Beijing Evening News reported a story directly from... The Onion... that Congress was threatening to move away from D.C. unless they were given a new capitol building with a retractable dome.

They tried to deny it, then when it got too big to deny, they made a non-apology by blaming The Onion:

"Some small American newspapers frequently fabricate offbeat news to trick people into noticing them, with the aim of making money. This is what the Onion does... According to congressional workers, the Onion is a publication that never ceases making up false reports."

You mean The Onion is not a reputable news source?

What about Weekly World News?

And did they really think the people would buy that? Different cultures may perceive humor differently, but I assume the Chinese understand the concept of “satire.”

This reminds me of the time a South American tv newscast reported a plane crash and they showed a scene from the pilot of Lost where you see the tail end of the plane break off from inside the plane as if it was exclusive news footage.
