Typo nitpick, sorry can't help myself: Alan Garner wrote The Moon of Gomrath. When you recall that YA includes Ursula LeGuin's original Earthsea trilogy, it should be obvious there are wonderful books squirreled away in a field characterized by a young protagonist. Heinlein's juveniles of the Fifties would be published today as YA. They are a major part of his oeuvre. (For my money, they are the major part of his literarily successful books!)
YA isn't a genre, it's a library shelf aimed at younger people who would find it easier to identify with a younger protagonist. Adults of course should be able to identify with a broader range of characters than inexperienced younger readers. Whether they would trouble to is another question entirely. Most YA books are unmemorable, to be kind, but this is true of most novels.
