Children of time

A couple of weeks back I rewatched it with my wife as well. Still one of my favorite episodes, because I really like the sci-fi premise and Sisko's dilemma. I think having their plan work might have felt like a cop out, though. Losing them all at the end comes as a devastating blow and just makes for good drama. It's the kind of Twilight Zone-esque twist Trek is really good at sometimes.

What has been an interesting experience with this rewatch is that I picked up on things about the episodes I never picked up on when I last rewatched the show years ago. Some things are bothering me now that I never even noticed before. And with “Children of Time” it was older Odo's behavior towards Kira. I used to just read it as romantic and sweet, which I guess is what the writers intended. But now it made me really uncomfortable watching how he constantly touches her and confesses his feelings in the most inappropriate moments. René Auberjonois was a marvelous actor and I have nothing but love for his talent and body of work, but I swear, some of the things the writers had him do or say were just so cringeworthy.

Odo's behaviour should have been a giant red flag to Kira. The writers having her fall in love with Odo was apalling after this.

How did they avoid inbreeding? Or is 200 years too short a time to make that a significant problem on a base population of max 150 individuals (and possibly the starting number might even have been much lower)? Or perhaps advanced 24 Federation science prevents it from happening?

The Defiant had 48 (plus Kira) onboard when they crashed. Though we have no way of knowing the demographics such as gender or species, plus who knows how many would actually be biologically compatible (we know Trills and Klingons needed medical intervention and its unlikely a ship like the Defiant would carry those sorts of drugs/treatments).

It is weird that not long after this Kira would start dating Odo, given he was complicit in the death of over 8000 people just to save her, something she didn't want and was accepting of her ultimate fate.

Well just like the ENT episode E2, where Phlox would have plenty of time to come up with a way to combine Human and Vulcan DNA, Bashir would have plenty of time on his hand and with his superior intellect come up with a way to combine Klingon and Trill DNA. It worked because there were mixed race Trill and mixed race Klingon people on the planet.
its interesting that Sisko was not disturbed he hooked up with someone or maybe he just contributed his sperm via insemination.

Yes the Founders had an obsessive fascist bend for order and did not understand the concept of 'mercy' but in light of what we the viewers know what happens in the future, losing Sisko would have meant losing the war.
Deliberately going back in time to save the colonists was the wrong call.

True, though Phlox had a whole medlab at his disposal, Bashir had even less than that when the ship was whole. We never do see any spotted Klingons though.

The colony was doomed the moment Defiant crashed. Events would play out differently due to everyone's foreknowledge. Either the colony disappears or it ripple effects into a colony with completely different people. They should have spent the 200 years learning how to make themselves time travel proof like Tasha Yar and Sela or whatever Annorax had on his spaceship.

Technically, wasn't that the older Odo who was complicit? "Her" Odo was in stasis all the time and couldn't have prevented it. It's a bit like, could you blame 1913 Hitler for the WW2 deaths (i.e. before some key traumatic events happened that made him the way he was)?

But I agree that knowing Odo had the potential to develop this character trait could have made her more wary.
