Children of the Storm/Voyager Novels Podcast

Kirsten Beyer

Writer
Red Shirt
Hey folks,

Tonight I did something I've never actually done before...a podcast interview with NDB Media. In the interview we discuss the upcoming Children of the Storm (briefly...not much in terms of spoilers), Voyager in general, a bit about my early days of writing and pitching, and some on the controversy surrounding Janeway's death.

So if you have an hour to kill and/or you're curious to know what I actually sound like in real life, here's the link. I also think that at some point it will be available on ITunes.

Cool, never thought I'd be eagerly anticipating a Voyager novel, but after the great Full Circle & Unworthy...here we are.:techman:

I'll check it out.

It was a great interview, and your interviewer seemed like a genuinely nice guy who was passionate about Star Trek: Voyager but it seemed like he kept talking over you a bit as you were trying to answer.

Otherwise, I thought it was great background information about you, your experiences, and a solid reminder of why even though Voyager isn't my favorite Star Trek Series, it certainly isn't without it merits and charms.

Cool, I'll have to check that out. I've been trying to generate enthusiasm at startrek.com for the book but not getting far. I don't even know if the site is planning on trying to interview Beyer.
Can't wait to read it!

I am really SO excited for this book. More than all the other books coming out for the rest of the year, with the possible exception of Rise Like Lions.

Kirsten, I'd just like to pop in and say that your work has confirmed something I have long suspected: Star Trek: Voyager has always had the right ingredients for greatness, and only needed the right cook to come along and make it shine. Bravo and thanks!

And it will be much better once the main ingredient is back. :techman:

But... the ship is still there and just fine.

I lol'd.

I listened to the whole interview, have posted my thoughts on what to me is the crucial topic in the VOY forum. Just wanted to add an agreement with Technobuilder about the host over talking! It seemed like Kirsten had quite a lot to say and no shyness saying it, I was often muttering at the host to stop babbling.

Yeah, and I am so emotionally connected to the ship.

This whole Janeway issue reminds me of one of my favorite quotes, from Emerson: "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." :vulcan:

Yeah, but from what I see that phrase means, I do believe it applies more to those who want to keep Janeway around than those who don't.

It's about self-reliance and the mind and has nothing to do with consistency in the way either of you seem to think it does - so I'd call it a draw.

^^Really? The essay is entitled "Self-Reliance," but this portion is able to stand on its own as an argument. Here is a larger portion of the essay:

"The other terror that scares us from self-trust is our consistency; a reverence for our past act or word, because the eyes of others have no other data for computing our orbit than our past acts, and we are loath to disappoint them.

"But why should you keep your head over your shoulder? Why drag about this corpse of your memory, lest you contradict somewhat you have stated in this or that public place? Suppose you should contradict yourself; what then? It seems to be a rule of wisdom never to rely on your memory alone, scarcely even in acts of pure memory, but to bring the past for judgment into the thousand-eyed present, and live ever in a new day. In your metaphysics you have denied personality to the Deity: yet when the devout motions of the soul come, yield to them heart and life, though they should clothe God with shape and color. Leave your theory, as Joseph his coat in the hand of the harlot, and flee.

"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines. With consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do. He may as well concern himself with his shadow on the wall. Speak what you think now in hard words, and to-morrow speak what to-morrow thinks in hard words again, though it contradict every thing you said to-day."

Just because PB has deemed it proper to take Voyager in this direction doesn't mean that they shouldn't rethink that decision and make changes. The same is true for all the relaunches. In time, they may just "bring the past for judgment" and decide that it is time "for a new day." I'm looking forward to it!

^ Right, but isn't that, um, what they did? Realize they didn't like the direction it was going and make changes?

It's only been like 2 years, and the 3 books in the mean time are really different from the entire canon before.

It's pretty fucking weird to say that killing the main character of a show off in the tie-in is a problem because people are too afraid of change.

I thought Voyager was a pretty cool ship, and I would be just as sad to see it destroyed as I was to hear that Janeway was killed.I was sad when the they destroyed the E-D and the Defiant. I know both crews got new ships in their next appearances, but I was still sad when it happend.
