Children names

I named some cats after ballparks. Don't know that I'd do it to my kid, but the cats don't seem to suffer any teasing from the neighborhood cats over their name.

My son's middle name is Miles. Depending on who I'm talking to, I say it's because of Chief O'Brien or Miles Davis. Truth is, it's neither, we just liked the name Miles for a middle name.

So you didn't name him after Tails from Sonic the Hedgehog? :p

I have a classmate whose baby boy is named Miles...Miles Danger [lastname].

Seems the father wanted the boy to be able to say, "Danger is my middle name."

And my prof last night said he had read that a new father filled out his baby girl's name while the new mother was sleeping: Sarah McCain Palin [lastname]. The prof joked that, if the father waited until the mother was asleep to do this, he better get ready to start paying child support--there's obviously some problems in that marriage beyond the political differences.

This was a Community Property class, so it was totally apropos

What's really confusing is when you have to go to another country and start referring to Miles as Kilometers. :p

First off, Tom, MAJOR congratulations!!

As for names, I've known so many people who picked out the "perfect" names, and then once they actually saw and held their child, s/he just didn't "seem" like those names, and they named the baby after what seemed "right" for him/her.

So have a few names in mind, but you'll know what to name the baby when s/he arrives.

Again, congratulations! Truly something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving!

Nothing wrong with naming your child after a favourite actor/musician or character in a book.
Personnally I would not chose a name that can only be linked to a specific character but I can see myself chosing a name that is also used in other contexts.
So for instance: James, Jean-Luc, Benjamin, Kathryn, Jonathan etc are Ok by me. But I would not chose something like Spock, Data,Worf etc.
I am bit on the edge for names like Jadzia. Names that sound ok but are not really used outside that specific context. However as long as it doesn't mean anything weird I don't see a probably with it.

I know someone with two children named Nynaeve and Perrin (out of the wheel of time by Jordan). I cannot see myself do that.
I also know a guy named Frodo.
And I know of a couple that named their daughter B'elenna.

British musician and comedian (and amateur Klingon) Bill Bailey famously named his first son Dax.

No doubt a fan of Star Trek VI, then. :wtf: [Wrong... - everyone]

Thank you Ted. Yeah, were gonna go in with a few names and see what happens. I have never felt so much pressure in my life. I never imagined that there would be so much to naming a child.
