Chelonians

Whofan

Fleet Captain
Anybody remember these guys from the books? They're given a reference by Moffat in The Pandorica Opens (and they also going to appear in Planet of the Dead), but they were one of the races the books used quite often, as the Daleks were mostly off-limits.

Being a book-based species, their appearence often changed. It was mentioned of course they were turtle-like, but it was never quite made clear what kind of turtle, hence there were various versons of them on the covers of the books.

Should the Chelonians ever appear in the TV series apart from the Pandorica reference? Or would it invite too many comparisons to say, the Ninja Turtles in the same way the Vulture aliens from SJA kind of recalled the bad guys from the Dark Crystal?

Well, Gareth Roberts created them for The Highest Science, on which Planet oif the Dead was (very vaguely) based, and they were originally going to be in that - until the temperatures on the desert shoot meant Chelonian costumes would be near lethal for the actors inside.

They're obviously not off-limits. The referance in The Pandorica Opens and the original intention of Planet of the Dead proves that. I would imagine it's only a matter of Moffat or Gareth Roberts thinking up a storyline. Or for that matter, they could always adapt one of the books featuring them, in a manner similar to Human Nature.
