Chaser's War on Everything - In Due Season

I think there's like a couple of Australians here so I was wondering if anyone's catching the final season of Chaser?

While I find the gonzo stuff kind difficult to watch (mainly because I feel end up feeling the shame that they should feel. ), I really love their sketches.

The latest episode had a genius one where they "adapted" Obama's "Yes We Can" song to the oratory genius of Kevin Rudd:

It's too bad the show is coming to an end though. Other than SNL (blah), there doesn't seem to be any good political sketch comedy on the air anymore. God, I'd almost pay for another season of Mind of Mencia now.

has it been confirmed that its ending, and what was said was not just a publicity stunt, or an attempt to get viewers to send stuff?

They've basically said that they're out of ideas... this season was already a short one, with 8 episodes and a two week hiatus, so I feel like they just came back for a proper finale.

That said, they really are going all out. Last week they did a bit on outsourcing and they "gave away" three minutes to Indian comics doing crappy gonzo streeters in India... like the Turban police and things like that. It was probably the most clever sketch TV show thing I've seen in my lifetime.

Ah, here it is:

I love this show. I know next to nothing about Australian politics, so I don't get many of the references, but it's hilarious anyway. Sometimes their stunts are cringe-worthy, but in general, this is a fantastic program imo. I'll miss it when it's gone.

the 1st episode of the series was awful, but the show is really back on form, I fear part of the problem is they are too well known, and now some of the audience is cynical towards their stunts, being well known would be why they did some stunts in London (which ive enjoyed) would love to see the BBC do a Chasers War on England show.

This season hasn't caught me like the first did. As for their two week break, I thought it was punishment for their Starlight Foundation sketch. Only seen probably two and a half episodes this season.

Caught part of the song last night during the State of Origin half time and then tonight I went to watch it on the ABC2 repeat but got a call part way through. I say Todd from The Gruen Transfer was on.

The only Australian comedy show I'm missing is Newstopia, that was a fantastic show.

I watched one on BBC Four recently, seemed rubbish to me so didn't bother with any more. I guess from this thread I should have given it a second chance?

the BBC 4 episode are just random sketch's from previous series sewed together.

Roger Wilco your right, that sketch was :guffaw: I wish they would do an episode that sews together all of the British sketches from this series, and the previous ones, other ones could include the Doctor Who song, and the one about British teens dressing in period costume

Yeah Bob, it's worth digging around for episodes if you can. But of course, it's also sort of hit and miss depending on how you prefer your political comedy.

Like Jono, I've watched bits and pieces of this season. They are running out of ideas, and can't suprise people as much as they use to be able with previous shows like CNNNN and The Chaser Decides.

Oh i did like Chas trying to open a Starbucks within a Starbucks. Americans seem so polite, in Oz it would be "get the F88k out of my restaurant"

Never been a big fan, because when they are on target they're good, but when off... yuck! Much preferred CNNNN (an earlier Chasers series).

And as a parent who has had a child with a very serious illness, their Make A Realistic Wish Foundation sketch was so far over the line it was a dot on the horizon, which led to the show being taken off air for a couple of weeks. When it came back it was much tighter.

You foreign chappies ( :) ) may not have seen that sketch, so:

It caused a HUGE furore, and, IMO, quite right too. These are guys who, I don't think, have kids of their own. Not so funny when it happens to you.

-- this has been a drunkl post by Australis. And I'll stand by this tomorrrow too.

they are two things that make that sketch over the line

1) the last line
2) it was funded by tax payers

remove those two things from the equation, and they would have gotten away with it.

Was it really a big deal down there?
Then again, stuff that happens on Canadian TV is so tame that it's hard to calibrate what is offensive or not anymore.

I wasn't offended by it either, but I'm pretty hard to offend when it comes to comedy anyway. I can see how some people would be though. But I think it was wrong to pull the show, comedians should be free to be shocking.

Well, it's state funded television, so I do kind of understand.
I'm sure the Chasers didn't mean any harm, but if they felt they really hurt some people I can emphasise why they apologised for that sketch.

Yeah the make A Wish Foundation parody was a big deal in Australia, so much so they eliminated it out of the ABC's online version the next day and eventually the Chaser team apologised, wether under duress I'm not sure. The scapegoat ended up being some comedy director at the ABC, she lost her job. Of course all the do gooders had their say about, including the PM Kevin Rudd who stated something like "they are free to make fun of people like me, but not sick kids". Hence the next few weeks you see the Chaser team following Kevin Rudd around. But as other posters have stated, comedians should be able to make these types of jokes, and if they fall flat then the viewer count will drop.
