Charlene Polite who played 'Vanna' in the 'Cloud Minders' died way back in June 1999.

She had dropped out of sight for many years and her death was just reported to IMDB & Memory Alpha, etc.

She was just 55 at the time and it was cancer that took her.

Rest in Peace young lady.

I'm shocked at the number of actresses from TOS that have succumbed to cancer. What, were they filming at the nuclear testing range like the Red River cast?

Smoking was still quite popular in the mid 60's. Cigarettes were still advertised on network television, up until the early 70's.

We've come a long way, baby.

It must be that or something similar. Good thing we've moved past that, at least significantly if not completely.

Actually, what is really odd is that out of the 160 TOS actors known to be dead----only 23 are women !!!

That's right, 137 dead males from TOS and 23 women.

There are, of course some actors who had very small parts and dropped out of sight who may well be dead, but still that's nears a 7 to 1 ratio.

Charlene Polite
Angelique PettyJohn
Joan Marshall
Meg Wyllie
Geogia Schmidt
Jane Ross
Susan Oliver
Anna Karen
Laura Wood
Karen Steele
Jeanne Bal
Elizabeth Rogers
Majel Barrett
Joan Swift-------------oops not dead, lucky for her, I'm was wrong !!
Rhae Andreece
Madlyn Rhue
Jill Ireland
Celia Lovsky
Jane Wyatt
Kathie Browne
Pilar Suerat

The ones I missed.........
Julie Parrish
Maryelizabeth Denver
Gail Bonney
Kay Elliott

So that's comes out to 24. Amazing, either being a TOS female actor prolongs your life or being a male one shortens it.

I reeled those off the top of my head and you can bet i couldn't name 120 of the dead male actors !!

If the underlying number of actors on Star Trek compared to the number of actresses on Star Trek approaches a seven to one ratio, then a seven to one death ratio wouldn't really be disproportionate. Perhaps there were vastly more male actors than female actresses on Star Trek to begin with.

(If there were only 24 women in Star Trek, then almost all of them are dead. And if there were 1300 men in Star Trek, only one tenth of them are gone now. So you'd need to know the original actor/actress sample sizes to reach any meaningful conclusion.)

So you're saying there might be many factors behind such numbers ??

Thanks.

Actually there were 401 different actors with speaking parts in TOS.

I'd guess that about 40% were female, but I'll check it out.

Well, I was not too close.

About 100 female actors were featured on TOS (living & dead combined)

So that's a 3 to 1 ratio to begin with. And of course many of the women were younger than the male actors as many of them were playing love interests etc.

But I still think just on raw numbers, 136 to 24 dead seems a tad askew.

So you would expect the death numbers to be 3 to 1, male to female to begin with. And yes, with Kirk's young love interests and aging admirals, I would expect the deaths to be from a skewed sample anyway.
