Chakotay as an MMA Fan?

I recall that Voyager was produced around the time Mixed Martial Arts was still an underground or relatively obscure sport. Remembering that Commander Chakotay had a background in boxing 'The Tattooed Terror' I wonder if he'd be an MMA fan if the sport still exists in the 24th Century or has died out since the 21st century.

I could imagine him being at least familiar with the sport, given his appreciation of the martial arts (especially boxing). I'm frankly not so sure he'd run a holoprogram of one of the UFCs though...

I don't think so. I think he's just into the traditional sports, especially boxing.

Although he did enjoy watching Tsunkatse and I think that would be the closest to an MMA.

That's what I figured, at least with the Tsunkatse episode. I figured he'd be semi-familiar with the phenomenon at least as someone who respects the martial arts.

Part of my fic has a scene where Ayala and my OC who are sparring buddies (they do a Vale Tudo as well as a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program on the holodeck, with Ayala teaching a class) write up a proposal to Tuvok citing how MMA training would help security officers in hand to hand. Not too far off base, considering that modern US Army Combatives have an MMA base to them. Would this sound plausible?

I could see Chakotay shaking his head at such a proposal by Lieutenants Ayala and Kano.
